VOLUNTEER
Volunteers are needed to help with picture day Friday, September 13th 8:30-1:45. Please email Julie if you are able to help, marks_j@4j.lane.edu.

PAR NEEDS YOU!!
Parents At Roosevelt (PAR) is Roosevelt’s parent organization and we need a group of dedicated and passionate parents to support RMS.  PAR sponsors school events such as the back to school ice cream social, activity nights, our fall fundraiser, and parent education nights.  PAR holds monthly business meetings to manage the budget, oversee teacher grants, organize the direct drive donation, oversee Showcase Roosevelt, and to assist with other activities such as 8th grade promotion.  Please consider volunteering your time with PAR and make a difference in the Roosevelt community.  Contact Julie at marks_j@4j.lane.edu to learn more about PAR co-chair duties.
THANK YOU
A big thank you goes to the following volunteers, who helped stuff back to school envelopes:  Bernadette Conover, Tara Parrillo, Arden Lucas, Stella Lucas, Liz Phelps, Anne Duret and Anielle Mainville.

Thank you to Bernadette Conover for coordinating the schedule for the Office Volunteers this year at Roosevelt. If you are interested in volunteering in the office, please know that the schedule is complete at the moment, but feel free to email Bernadette so she can contact you for possible openings in the future.  Bernadette’s email is aabcjunk@clearwire.net.

Thanks also to these volunteers who helped Meredith Coelho check in math books:
Tara Parillo, Lisa Woodruff, Barb DiMarco and Nick DiMarco.

Thank you to Papa’s Pizza on west 18th for donating pizzas to Roosevelt’s leadership planning committee.

Thank you to Sequential Biofuels and all participants in its Driving Change Campaign, which resulted in a donation of $12.60 to Roosevelt.

OREGON BATTLE OF THE BOOKS

From the Roosevelt Librarian, Meredith Coelho
Dear Roosevelt Community,
The Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) is revving up for 2013-14. OBOB supports engagement in reading as well as being a social and competitive outlet. Last year we had 60 students participate and they all read many books and had fun with their friends and classmates.  Due to a cut in my library time, I will be unable to run the OBOB competitions this year, but I can offer support, space and books to parents who would like to continue OBOB at Roosevelt.
Traditionally, interested Roosevelt students come to a meeting in October, create groups and start reading. We meet every other week before the in-school battles start, which is right after Winter Break. The in-school battles continue until late February, when the winning Roosevelt team goes to regionals. The OBOB season ends with a party in March.
To continue OBOB at RMS, we need volunteers. Specifically, we need one person who can commit to being the OBOB leader this year. This entails coming in on Wednesdays from about 11:30 to 1 on meeting days, possibly longer on battle days. Good management and organization skills will be helpful as well.
I did OBOB last year and I can counsel, advise and be there for meetings and battles, but because of my teaching schedule I can’t commit to running the whole program. We also have a few other parents who can help, but aren’t able to run it. If you feel that you can and want to support our community in this capacity, please email me. I will be delighted to hear from you!

TRANSPORTATION
Busy mornings? Point2point at Lane Transit District has a solution for that! And it’s FREE! Schoolsolutions offers transportation options to families with students grades K-12. Just enroll online and Schoolsolutions can match you to other families in your area that attend your child’s school. You will be updated if someone joins in your area and has a similar commute. Enrolling does not commit you to carpooling, walking, or biking, but it sure is a convenient option to have…just in case! It’s an easy way to develop contacts with families at your school to share in the walking, biking, or carpooling responsibilities.
Visit www.point2pointsolutions.org/schoolsolutions to enroll for walking, biking, or carpool matching services to:
·         Save time and money
·         Find families in your area to help share the school commute
·         Reduce congestion and pollution around your school
