WELCOME! (A Note from Principal Chris Mitchell)
I hope you all had a restful and fun summer!  We are excited to have Roosevelt filled with students again, and we have a wonderful mix of new and returning staff to welcome them to school.  Don’t forget about the Roosevelt Ice Cream social coming up on September 12th to reconnect with old friends and meet new ones.  As always, Roosevelt values your family’s support through volunteering, monetary contributions to EEF, and attending Parent At Roosevelt meetings.  We’re looking forward to a great year!
Back to school envelopes were mailed and should have been delivered to your mail box by now.  If you have not received your back to school envelope, please go to the Roosevelt web site ( http://www.roosevelt.4j.lane.edu/)  and download the documents or come to the office to pick up a hard copy of the back to school information.

Picture Day:  Volunteers are needed to help with picture day Friday, September 13th 8:30-1:45. Please email Julie if you are able to help, marks_j@4j.lane.edu.

Fresh Flower Crew:  We need 2 volunteers to be our Fresh Flower Crew.  Duties include picking up donated flowers from Trader Joes and arranging them into smaller vases for classrooms.  If you’re able to do this, please contact Blanche at colson_b@4j.lane.edu

Homework Club:  Volunteers are needed for homework club. Morning homework club is 8:15-8:45am and afternoon homework club is 3:30-4:30 M,W, TH and F, and 2:30-3:30 on Wednesday.  If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Mary Peterson at peterson_ma@4j.lane.edu .

PAR (Parents-At-Roosevelt)

Parents-at-Roosevelt typically meets at 9am on the first Friday of every month.  We meet in the room across the hall from the main office to get an update from administration, discuss the school budget, teacher grants, and generally how to best support the school and its staff.  All parents are welcome!  Our first meeting will be Friday, October 4th at 9:00am.  Last year we tried meeting on the first Monday evening of the month, but found that more parents were able to attend the Friday morning time slot.  We’re open to changing the time to suit most parents’ schedules.
Thank you to The Original Pancake House on Franklin Blvd and Long’s Meat Market for donating pancake batter and bacon, respectively, for the staff back to school breakfast.  Thank you also to Starbucks on 18th and Pearl for providing coffee for the breakfast.

Thank you to Bernadette Conover and Brenda Wetzel for cooking and serving pancakes at the breakfast and again to Bernadette for grilling the bacon in advance.

Thank you to Target and all the families who participated in Target’s Take Charge of Education program that resulted in Target’s donation to Roosevelt of $265.64.

ROOSEVELT CHESS CLUB will be starting on September 19! New players are welcome. We will meet on Thursdays, 3:40-5:00PM in the Library. Parents At Roosevelt (PAR) is Roosevelt’s parent organization and we need a group of dedicated and passionate parents to support RMS.  PAR sponsors school events such as the back to school ice cream social, activity nights, our fall fundraiser, and parent education nights.  PAR holds monthly business meetings to manage the budget, oversee teacher grants, organize the direct drive donation, oversee Showcase Roosevelt, and to assist with other activities such as 8th grade promotion.  Please consider volunteering your time with PAR and make a difference in the Roosevelt community.  Contact Julie at marks_j@4j.lane.edu to learn more about PAR chair or co-chair duties.

Dear Roosevelt Community,
The Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) is revving up for 2013-14. OBOB supports engagement in reading as well as being a social and competitive outlet. Last year we had 60 students participate and they all read many books and had fun with their friends and classmates.  Due to a cut in my library time, I will be unable to run the OBOB competitions this year, but I can offer support, space and books to parents who would like to continue OBOB at Roosevelt.
Traditionally, interested Roosevelt students come to a meeting in October, create groups and start reading. We meet every other week before the in-school battles start, which is right after Winter Break. The in-school battles continue until late February, when the winning Roosevelt team goes to regionals. The OBOB season ends with a party in March.
To continue OBOB at RMS, we need volunteers. Specifically, we need one person who can commit to being the OBOB leader this year. This entails coming in on Wednesdays from about 11:30 to 1 on meeting days, possibly longer on battle days. Good management and organization skills will be helpful as well.
I did OBOB last year and I can counsel, advise and be there for meetings and battles, but because of my teaching schedule I can’t commit to running the whole program. We also have a few other parents who can help, but aren’t able to run it. If you feel that you can and want to support our community in this capacity, please email me. I will be delighted to hear from you!
