TONIGHT!  RMS OPEN HOUSE
Our RMS Open House will take place tonight, September 26 from 6:00 – 8:00pm.  The evening provides an opportunity for you to experience an abbreviated version of your student’s class schedule.  You can meet your student’s teachers, learn about each class curriculum, and ask questions.  The event is geared toward parents and guardians, and not toward students.  Parents will go directly to the Adviser’s room and learn about House.  There you will also receive a copy of your student’s schedule.
PARENTS AT ROOSEVELT (PAR)
PAR needs you!   Please come our 1st monthly PAR meeting on Friday, October 4th at 9:00am.  Thanks to all who came to our informational meeting on Tuesday the 24th.  We had a great turnout with many dedicated Roosevelt parents.
PAR (Parents at Roosevelt) is a self directed parent organization that supports the students and teachers of Roosevelt in a variety of ways. PAR runs or supports events such as activity nights, parent education nights, HAP (our Holiday Assistance Program for families at RMS on the free or reduced lunch program), staff appreciation events, Showcase Roosevelt and 8th grade promotion (dance and pool party).  PAR fundraises to support the school, with the main fundraiser being Showcase Roosevelt in late spring.  PAR also holds monthly business meeting which have typically been the first Friday of each month. In these monthly meetings decisions are made regarding disbursing funds for teacher grants, parent education events are planned, 4-J budget issues are discussed, and many events are planned and implemented.
If you are interested in participating in PAR this year, please plan to stop by on Friday morning.  If you are interested in a specific position (chair, co-chair, or secretary) please contact our volunteer co-ordinator, Julie at marks_j@4j.lane.edu or our principal, Chris Mitchell at mitchell_c@4j.lane.edu.  All parents are always welcome to attend and participate in our monthly PAR meetings.  We look forward to seeing you on Friday the 4th!
ROOSEVELT ACTIVITY DAY
Roosevelt Activity Day (or RAD) is Roosevelt’s fall fundraiser for student activities (field trips, etc.), classroom support (staffing), teacher project grants, and family financial assistance (waive fees for families in need).  Many schools have magazine sales to raise funds, however, RMS chooses to raise funds with a fun event that allows teachers to build House spirit or teach lessons related to philanthropy and healthy lifestyles.  On October 4 each House will “walk the Amazon Trail” (~ 3 mile route) and demonstrate House spirit by wearing costumes or chanting “House cheers.”  Please find sponsors for your student to make the trek and actively engage in the activity. The students will have a modified morning schedule, then hike in the afternoon.  There will be special awards to encourage House creativity and a pizza party for the House that generates the largest RMS donation. There will be a student social following the walk with DJ Sunny spinnin’ the tunes.  The goal for RMS this year is $20,000.  Please help us reach our goal!!  Students were given a fundraising envelope on September 23 in House.  Please make sure they read the yellow fundraising tips tucked inside the envelope.  Collection days are Monday, September 30, Thursday, October 3 and Friday, October 4.  Students should turn in their collected donations to their Adviser to be counted in the House competition.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
RMS receives fresh flowers from Trader Joe’s.  The donation provides fresh flowers for classrooms.  A volunteer is needed to come to school on Mondays sometime between 10:00 and 11:00 to prepare vases for the flowers. If you can do this, please contact Blanche at colson_b@4j.lane.edu

VOLUNTEER BACKGROUND CHECK

If you volunteer at Roosevelt, please make sure you fill out a background check form electronically.  You can do so at
www.helpcounter.net/eugene.  This link is also available on the Volunteer section of the RMS website.  If you do not have access to a computer, please contact Julie in the office.   Volunteer background checks are good for a duration of two years.

RAD (Roosevelt Activity Day) NEEDS YOU!

We still need 45 parent volunteers to help chaperone walking the bark path at RAD on Friday, October 4th!  The house walks will happen in the afternoon between 1:15 and 3:00.   We need you to help chaperone the students while walking with their houses on the bark path.  We are looking for 2 parents per house and are hoping for flexibility if you are able to volunteer as some houses may have more than 2 volunteers and some may have fewer.  Please contact our volunteer coordinator, Julie Marks, with your availability:  marks_j@4j.lane.edu.

HOMEWORK CLUB
Homework Club is a time and place for students to work on homework at school and it is now in full swing.  Morning homework club meets from 8:15 to 8:45 and afternoon homework club starts right after school and goes for one hour.  This is open to all students; they just need to make sure they have work to do.  Homework Club meets in the C6 Computer Lab.  Volunteers are needed and appreciated, and healthy snack donations are also appreciated.  If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Mary Peterson at peterson_ma@4j.lane.edu .

LEGISLATIVE SESSION ON SCHOOL FUNDING
The Governor has called a special legislative session Sept 30:  Legislators are considering a bargain to raise revenue through additional taxes, and control costs through restrictions to public retirement benefits.  If the measure passes, it will provide over $3 million more in funds to the 4J school district this year.  To learn more about what the bargain does and to sign a petition in support, go to http://stand.org/oregon/action/iminforschools
REPEATED FROM LAST WEEKLUNCH MENTOR COORDINATOR
Do you have 3 to 4 hours a week to give to Roosevelt’s Mentor Program? We’re looking for a Roosevelt parent who can volunteer three to four hours per week (two of those hours will be at lunchtime, the rest will be from your home) to administer our lunchtime mentor program. It’s easy, requires no special training, and you get to meet some awesome people. Through this program, mentors (adults in the community and college students) meet once a week with Roosevelt students who have been referred by the counselor. Last year, we had 30 pairs of mentors and students. Although the counselor runs the program, the administrative aspects are handled by a parent volunteer. The job involves opening the room where the pairs meet, making sure the students are here, communicating with the mentors, and working with the counselor. It’s fun and deeply satisfying. Please contact Anne if you’d like more information (acbridgman@gmail.com or 541-232-7920).
