Showcase is the biggest fundraising event of the year at Roosevelt. It generally raises about $20,000 per year for PAR, which uses the funds to support teacher grant requests and staffing. This event centers around an auction, but equally important, it “showcases” all the great things going on at Roosevelt. The two aspects of the event support each other-families coming to see their student(s) perform, or showcase club displays, science activities, or art displays will also purchase auction items. Funds raised then support Roosevelt’s academic programs, generally in the form of additional FTE. Different food/dinner options help to make the event more fun and make it so that families can incorporate their dinner plans for the evening with Showcase. Students can enjoy some fun activities like karaoke, games, Wii, a cake walk, and dancing. Additionally, Showcase serves as an important introduction to Roosevelt for incoming 5th grade families from our feeder schools. PAR puts on this event with support from the RMS volunteer coordinator and office staff.

There are a variety of different ways in which you can help to make Showcase Roosevelt 2017 a success. Our main committees are: auction and fundraising, publicity and decorations, food, entertainment and showcase of talent, and student activities and games. While some of these categories are still in need of chairs to help guide them, all need manpower in the planning process. If you are interested in helping us put on this year’s event, please join us on Friday, January 13th, from 9:00-10:00 in the RMS office conference room as we kick off our planning for Showcase. If you are unable to attend this initial meeting, please contact Alexis Borrevik at ancborrevik@yahoo.com. We will begin meeting more regularly now that school is back in session and look forward to working with many Roosevelt families.

Evidence-Based Learning Strategies for Academic Success in Middle School

Please join PAR on Wednesday, January 18th from 7:00-8:00 in the Roosevelt library for our first Parent Education Night of the 2016-2017 school year. This month’s presentation is Evidence-Based Learning Strategies for Academic Success in Middle School by Catrin Rode, a cognitive psychologist and research professor at the University of Oregon and Roosevelt parent. As parents, we can all use tools and tips to help us guide our students on the path to success in middle school, high school, and beyond.

We look forward to seeing you on the 18th and hope that you’ll join us for this month’s PAR business meeting from 9:00-10:00 the morning of Friday, January 13th in the conference room in the Roosevelt office. This month we start our major work on Showcase Roosevelt and your help is needed to make this event a success. Email ancborrevik@yahoo.com with any questions about either event.

Evidence-Based Learning Strategies for Academic Success in Middle School

Our brains are made to learn. Whether a student is gifted, has ADHD, a learning disability or none of the above, everybody has challenges and everybody has strengths. Using the right evidence-based strategies for learning, studying and managing academic tasks will help a student to succeed in school. In this presentation, we will discuss which strategies work best for which kind of learner.

Catrin Rode, PhD, University of Oregon

Catrin Rode is a cognitive psychologist, research professor at the University of Oregon’s Center on Brain Injury Research and Training (CIBRT), and a resident psychologist in private practice. For over 15 years Catrin has taught at the U of O and developed evidence-based interventions for children with ADHD and learning difficulties. Her expertise is in learning, memory and cognition and her research is funded by the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Catrin and her husband have three children in college, high school and middle school. If she still has time left, she likes to hike, run and enjoy her friends.
