HAP (Help All People) was a success; by working together we were able to provide boxes full of amazing food to families in our community.

Special thanks to the parent coordinators Valeria MacLeod and Hillary Lazinski, the volunteers Sandra Thissell, JoAnn Hoffman, Nick Cervantes, Anne Miksis, Amy England, Camille Foskett and Brena Anders, and to the Student Government who promoted the donations. And last, but not least, a big thank you to the Praise Community Church and all of you who gave food and monetary donations.  It couldn’t have happened without you.

OWL/Human Sexuality

Are you curious about the OWL/human sexuality curriculum that your 8th grade student will be learning this year? Join Eric Johannsen and counselor Hollie Schulze on Wednesday, January 10th at 6:00pm to hear about the curriculum, preview what your student will be learning, and have a chance to ask questions about the material.

In addition to the OWL presentation, Hollie will be giving a presentation on Naviance, a program currently being used throughout 4j. Naviance is a comprehensive college and career readiness solution that helps districts and schools align student strengths and interests to postsecondary goals, improving student outcomes and connecting learning to life.

It’s School Choice Time
Come see what our schools offer!

In Eugene School District 4J, every school offers an excellent education for our students. Students may enroll in their neighborhood school at any time, or request enrollment in a different 4J school, provided there is a place available. School choice requests will be accepted in an order determined by lottery.

To be included in the lottery, 4J residents must apply by Wednesday, January 31, at midnight. This is an earlier deadline than in previous years. Non-district residents must apply between March 1 and Friday, April 1, at midnight. All students who want to obtain a transfer must apply, including new incoming siblings and students who have moved but want to stay enrolled at our school.

School visits are scheduled in the month of January. If you have any friends or family members who are considering school choice, please invite them to come learn more about our wonderful school and their school choice options!

We appreciate the number of students at Roosevelt who either bike or walk to school.  This dedication to non-motorized commuting to school not only supports a healthy lifestyle, but also assists all of us with less traffic for student pick up and drop off.

Unfortunately, we have seen a recent increase in bicycle thefts from the bike rack area in front of the school, even during school hours. We are considering options for better survellience of the bike rack area, however, here are some tips students can learn to prevent bicycle theft:

Lock your bike using a quality U-Lock – bikes locked with cable locks have been cut
Lock your front wheel with a cable
Don’t leave your bike overnight
Lock your quick release seat
Remove head and tail lights

Students are encouraged to register their bikes online at www.eugene-or.gov/bikeregistration. Additional information is also available at that site.

Bike-Locking Tip of the Month from Eugene Springfield Safe Routes to School
Don’t use a U-lock around your bike’s top tube, says Michael McGettigan, owner of Trophy Bikes in Philadelphia. A thief could use the frame as a lever to pop it open. Use the lock to secure a wheel to your down tube.

Are you curious about global events? Do you enjoy considering different perspectives on world issues? Do you want to make a difference in your local and global community?

You might be interested in Eugene International High School!  Eugene IHS is an award-winning alternative high school in international studies for students in grades 9-12.  Located at Churchill, Sheldon and South Eugene, the school is open via district lottery to any student who wishes to attend.  If you are curious about the world and want to be part of a close-knit community of learners in a unique environment that is both challenging and supportive, we hope you will consider Eugene IHS as your high school choice.

Admission into Eugene IHS is through the 4J District lottery process; all students must fill out an online 4J School Choice Lottery Application. 4J School Choice Lottery Applications for 2018-19 will be available in January.  Go to the 4J District School Choice web page for school choice deadlines and applications: http://www.4j.lane.edu/choice.

IMPORTANT DATES for the 2018-2019 School Year:
January 1: Online application period for 4J School Choice Lottery opens for in-district students
January 31: Deadline to submit in-district 4J School Choice Lottery Applications

Immersion students will be enrolled in Eugene IHS without the lottery process because they entered immersion through the lottery in elementary or middle school. However, immersion students do need to submit the Eugene IHS Enrollment Form to the Eugene IHS office at South or Sheldon by the January 31st deadline. This form will be included in a special mailing to immersion families.

Snow day notifications: Our school district communicates any decision to change school or bus schedules as quickly as possible in several ways, all well before 6:30 a.m.

School schedule:
School Closure = No school for students. Decision about afternoon/evening activities will be made by noon.
Two-Hour Delay: School starts two hours late and ends at the regular school dismissal time, even if the day would normally have had a weekly late-start or early-release schedule.  Roosevelt’s two-hour delay schedule is 10:50-3:30

Snow Routes: Some school bus routes have alternate “snow routes” that avoid higher and steeper elevations. If you need information about your student’s bus route, please see www.4j.lane.edu/transportation/snowroutes.

Parent Choice: Please consider the road conditions in your own area in making your decision about school attendance, and notify the school if your student will be staying home. Parents’ decisions about absences for weather-related safety reasons will be honored.
