Message from the Principal & Assistant Principal
Hello, families!

We certainly hope you were able to soak up some of the fall sunshine this weekend… being glued to a screen all week, each of our families definitely look forward to getting out every weekend, having a break from the house, our iPads and laptops, and capitalizing on the weather while we can. We hope you can also do the same whenever possible!

As we move ever closer to true winter weather, the end of the trimester is approaching on Thursday, December 10. Counting this coming week, students have only ten more synchronous sessions with each of their teachers prior to trimester end. This is a great time to check in on classes with your student, make sure your observer status is set up and notifications are working the way you’d like. To set up as an observer, use this link to request a pairing code.

We suggested it, you encouraged it, and it’s happening! Office hours are starting to pop– hurrah! Office hours are for *any* reason… whether your student needs a quick clarification on an assignment or just wants to say hello and check in, they can and should! We know the idea of “office hours” is very collegiate… and asking for help, knowing how to advocate for what you need, and working to establish relationships with teachers are crucial skills for the future. Bravo to students who are diving in!
In addition to office hours, Homework Club is going strong… please help your students attend. Each day from 10:30 – 11:45 am, Homework Club provides a welcoming place for students to get help, meet in break-out rooms for study sessions, and use structured time for academic support. The Zoom link is available on the RMS Clubs and Activities page via Canvas.

Regarding attendance… we know it’s still a little confusing! And, today, Monday, November 9, the auto-dialer will start to report absences. Students have twenty-four hours to show engagement either in Canvas or on Zoom to be counted present. Essentially, we will always be one day behind as we report absences for the previous day. Please contact Theresa Elmore at elmore_t@4j.lane.edu if you have questions or need more information.
Finally, we know last week was full of anticipation and uncertainty and that students have many different reactions to regional and national events. We do our very best to have meaningful and supportive conversations in class, honoring the variety of perspectives and experiences our students bring. It’s a tall task to help students navigate their responses to political and social discussions and one we take very seriously as we seek to educate young citizens in our democracy.

This Wednesday, we pause to honor those who have served our country, including members of our 4j staff and families– our heartfelt thanks to each of you. We also hope the midweek no-school day will be restorative for our staff and families who are working hard every day.  On that day and every day, please, wash your hands, cover your face, and keep your distance… as our county numbers rise even as we plan for a potential return in a hybrid model, we all need to do our part, and the hardest part is staying apart.

With gratitude and respect,
Courtney and Mike

Oregon Delivers New Metrics for Returning to School

Last week, Governor Kate Brown delivered new information that changes the metrics for a return to in-person learning. While our 4j students will not be coming back to the building right away– Lane County currently doesn’t meet minimum requirements– we are planning for resuming on-site learning in a hybrid model after Winter Break, starting as early as January, if public health conditions allow it.
We don’t know any more details than what our superintendent has shared. At RMS and across the district, getting students back in school safely is the highest priority. While the state has revised the rules that allow for in-person instruction at reduced levels of risk, this does not mean we’ll come back immediately or even on the current projected district timeline. The changes do make it more likely that some or all students will be able to return at some point to buildings in a hybrid model.
We know everyone is doing their part to make returning to school a more viable option this winter. Masking, maintaining social distance, foregoing social gatherings, practicing good hygiene, and cooperating with contact tracing measures helps all of us!  Our school and district priorities remain the health and safety of our students and staff, and our students’ learning and wellbeing. If you are interested in the details from the state, you’ll find more information here: New Metrics Overview • Current Case Rates

Oregon Battle of the Books
Oregon Battle of the Books is happening this year! If you are interested in participating in an online OBOB, you don’t need to have a team to join. There’s an excellent line up of books this year and it promises to be an OBOB season like no other! For more information, please contact Meredith Coelho at coelho_m@4j.lane.edu.
