Message from the Principal & Assistant Principal

Greetings, families:

We hope you enjoyed a lighter load last week… we have a full week ahead! And, before we know it, winter break will be here and we’ll be well into the new year. We’re thinking of all our families as we head into a two-week state-wide freeze and wishing you all the best.

In January and February, we may be looking at the option of a hybrid school model, depending on how COVID-19 case rates look across Lane County. And, we need information from you! Please visit the district website at https://www.4j.lane.edu/2020/11/learning-pathways-request-now-to-change-next-term/ to learn more about your student’s options should we be able to move into a hybrid. If you want to change your initial request from August, you can go straight to the family survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/4Jpathwaychange. The deadline for changing your request is Sunday, November 22.

In addition, we need feedback about how we’re doing in distance learning! While RMS is working on gathering data from students via House and academic classes, the district would also like to know more about your experience. Please don’t miss this valuable opportunity to share your voice, your challenges and your successes: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/4Jparentfallfeedback.
You’ll also have the chance to share your experiences at the Parents at Roosevelt (PAR) meeting this Thursday, November 19. Sixth grade families, please join us at 6 pm and all grades, at 6:30 pm. This is a great place to connect, problem-solve, hear about news of the school and plans for parent action. We will not  host a coffee chat Thursday morning and hope to see you at PAR Thursday evening instead.

With the end of the trimester approaching on Thursday, December 10, don’t forget you can set up as an observer anytime in your student’s Canvas account. Use this link to request a pairing code. Office hours and Homework Club are still super places for students to get help, connect with peers, and have some structured study time. Zoom links are available on teachers’ Canvas pages and on the RMS Clubs and Activities page on Canvas.

The attendance calls will go out again today, Monday, November 16 for the second time this year. Please remember students have twenty-four hours to show engagement either in Canvas or on Zoom to be counted present and should be logging in to each class, each day, Wednesdays included. Please contact Theresa Elmore at elmore_t@4j.lane.edu if you have questions or need more information. Please also remember teachers are doing their very best to get back to you quickly and are receiving an enormous volume of email generated by Zoom and Canvas queries and requests. Thanks for your patience.

And, thanks for your patience each and every day as we all do our best to navigate distance learning… we continue to learn and grow along with our families and students!

With gratitude,
Courtney and Mike

Notes of Appreciation
Greetings Roosevelt families,

As we enter into the holiday season, one unlike any other, I invite you and your child(ren) to take a few moments to show some gratitude and appreciation for our wonderful Roosevelt teachers. In lieu of a teacher appreciation event this month, please take some time to send a kind note of appreciation, either from you or child, to one or more of their teachers (all email addresses are available on the school website).

If the last nine months have taught us anything, it’s that the simplest gestures can have a huge impact. Words of kindness are a wonderfully personal way to say thank you to our teachers during this season of gratitude.
Stay tuned for information about upcoming teacher appreciation events and other ways to celebrate our incredible educators. Have a happy, healthy, safe Thanksgiving.

Reminder for Student Meal Pick-Up
Be safe when you pick up student meals at Roosevelt. Please remember to wear your mask when picking up meals; this keeps you and our staff safe. If wearing a mask is an issue, please consider signing up for delivery (https://www.4j.lane.edu/communications/coronavirus/foodservice/)

Library Cards
A library card is the most powerful school supply a student can have, and all students in 4J schools are eligible for a free Eugene library card – including those who live outside of the Eugene city limits. The library card application was mailed to families as an insert in the district handbook, but if you misplaced yours, call the office (541-790-8500) and we can make arrangements to get one to you.

Taking “Eye Breaks” During Screen Time
A Roosevelt parent recently shared an informative video with us regarding taking eye breaks when sitting in front of a screen for an extended period of time. Click on the link below to watch the quick clip and learn about the 20-20-20 rule and how you can help your child take eye breaks throughout the school day.
