Message from the Principal & Assistant Principal
Dear RMS Families: 
Bravo to all of us! We’ve made it to the end of the first trimester in distance learning and have gained an incredible amount of knowledge during this brand-new experience. From Canvas to Zoom, engaging, connecting, interacting, and learning together has taken on dimensions we’ve never experienced at middle school before. Whether your student had a slow start and is managing independently now or whether they were motivated initially and now struggle with CDL fatigue, every student and family experience is real and normal…we’re in this together, each with our own unique challenges and triumphs. 

To gauge these experiences, this week, your students will receive surveys in all their classes, including House. On Tuesday, House advisors will deliver a survey designed to gain overall impressions of CDL and students’ connections to school and community. On Wednesday and Thursday, each teacher will deliver a separate and different survey to each of their classes. The survey will ask students to identify the activities and actions they have most enjoyed during the first trimester, share generally about their work habits, and offer suggestions for how their experiences could be enhanced and improved. As a staff, we are looking forward to examining the data and considering the implications while continuing to build on emerging best practices.  

Because we are finishing out the trimester this week, we do have a special schedule. Monday and Tuesday are regular A and B days, and on Wednesday and Thursday, students will attend synchronous classes only in the afternoons– no office hours or independent work in the morning. Please see the attachment on this communication for a visual rendering of the week. 

As we close out trimester one, consider the possibility of a new and fresh start for you and your student in trimester two. This is the chance for all of us to take the lessons of the past three-and-half-months, focus our best habits and strategies, and start again with a renewed sense of purpose. As always and because each students’ experience is uniquely their own, please never hesitate to reach out. We may not be able to get back to you immediately, but we read and consider everything. And together, we understand better.

Who Are the People in Your Neighborhood?
RMS’s unique community is a particular source of its strength. During distance learning, as we all seek more meaningful ways to connect and grow, we would like to introduce a speaker series for students to attend every Monday or Tuesday morning.
If you or a family member has an exciting profession, a special hobby, or talent to share, we’d love to hear from you as we develop a series we’re calling “Who are the People in Your Neighborhood?” (We may even play that theme song upon entry to a Zoom session!) Help All People (HAP) Drive 2020
The HAP Drive is On! For over a quarter of a century, families at Roosevelt have shown their generous spirit by donating food and other supplies to Eugene families during the holiday season. As with so many events in 2020, our annual HAP — Help All People — drive will be a little different this time around. During the HAP drive this year, we will be distributing prepaid gift cards from local grocery stores to families in our school community.

There are two ways you can contribute:

1) Purchase prepaid gift cards from local grocery stores. Suggested stores include: Albertsons, Safeway, Winco, Fred Meyer, Target or Walmart. Any prepaid amount is welcomed. Please clearly mark the value of any cards donated. Cards may be donated at RMS between 8 am and 4 pm, Monday – Friday from November 30 to December 11. You can also mail cards to the school: 500 E 24th Ave, Eugene, OR 97405.

2) Make a cash donation of any amount online at https://www.schoolpay.com/link/HAP-2020 and a Roosevelt staff member will purchase the gift cards using your donation.

Library Cards
A library card is the most powerful school supply a student can have, and all students in 4J schools are eligible for a free Eugene library card – including those who live outside of the Eugene city limits. The library card application was mailed to families as an insert in the district handbook, but if you misplaced yours, call the office (541-790-8500) and we can make arrangements to get one to you.
