Message from the Principal & Assistant Principal
Greetings, all!
Welcome to February… the long month of almost no flex-Wednesdays is behind us and we can look forward to a more regular schedule this month. Do note there is no long weekend for President’s Day in accordance with the district calendar.

We heard from many of you the last two weeks, as you and your students reached a saturation point with Zoom class sessions and Canvas. Please know we are listening in order to support students in managing their workload… and as always, coming to office hours– as scary as it might be for a student the first time– is *such* an important way to check in and connect. When we looked at data from our school-wide December survey, many students shared they did not want to go to office hours because they did not want to disappoint their teachers or appear as though they didn’t understand the work. We do not want students to internalize their CDL experience this way and are sharing widely: It is 100% normal to need help, clarification or additional information. And, office hours are one way of getting additional support.

In addition, you might get an invitation to a Wednesday afternoon meeting for you and your student with two grade-level teachers as we prioritize students we aren’t regularly seen in Zoom. Please look for both an email, a message in Canvas and a text message to remind you of times and dates.

Another way of supporting your own student(s), their friends and youth in our community is coming up on Tuesday, February 23 from 6:00 – 7:00 pm:
In collaboration with South Eugene High School (SEHS) and Spencer Butte Middle School, SEHS Parent Council is inviting South region families to a special presentation with Lane County’s Suicide Prevention/Mental Health Promotion Coordinator Roger Brubaker. Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) is a suicide intervention training appropriate for all people. QPR provides participants with a basic understanding of suicide, how to identify warning signs, how to engage with people with thoughts of suicide and how to connect them with a variety of resources. This QPR session will be tailored to the needs of parents and specifically address youth suicide; however, many of the topics discussed will be applicable to other populations.

Given our context, events we’ve experienced recently in our own district and schools, we truly hope you can join us for this important webinar event. English to Spanish translation will be available. For other language or signing needs, please contact us so we can make arrangements with the translators.

A link to the webinar will be made available several days before the event.
Thanks for continuing to reach out and share your experiences with us! No matter what comes, we’ll be moving together into the coming months, whether more in person or still online.
Our best,
Courtney and Mike
