Message from the Principal & Assistant Principal
 Dear RMS Families:
Welcome back from Spring Break and welcome to the final trimester of the year! We hope your break was restful and rejuvenating and a true respite from online learning. We now have twelve weeks left in the 2020-21 school year and in just two short weeks, will start our hybrid/same-school online schedule.

A few reminders about the next two weeks and some special schedule reminders:
* March 29 – April 2 and April 5 – 9, students will be in their new trimester three classes in our regular distance learning schedule– asynch work in the mornings and Zoom sessions in the afternoons. Monday, March 29 is a Flex Day with only asynch assignments and no student activities or meetings in the afternoon

* Wednesday, April 7 is a regular Flex Day schedule with no clubs, meetings or activities for students in the afternoon. 

* Thursday, April 8 and Friday, April 9 there will be no live instruction on Zoom in the afternoons and students will have synch assignments to complete. This is so teachers can prepare for teaching in the new hybrid/SSO model.

* Beginning April 12, we move to our hybrid/SSO schedule– Zoom in the mornings with all student groups, in-person for one group in the afternoon. The new hybrid/SSO schedule can be found here. It is also attached to this eNews.

We enjoyed meeting with many of you prior to spring break at our regularly scheduled Parents at Roosevelt meeting. We’ve scheduled two more information sessions this week: Tuesday, March 29 at noon and Friday, April 2 at 9:00 am. Please join us in our Zoom Room: https://zoom.us/j/9366455771 with meeting ID: 936 645 5771.  

As we’ve become accustomed to this year, on Monday last week, the Oregon Department of Education sent out additional new guidance for schools relating to social distancing requirements. We expect to have more updates to hybrid/SSO by the end of this week and have appreciated hearing from you. We are working on additional ways to best support both groups of students which will include expanded Homework Club and Office Hours for students in SSO.  

By early next week, for those students coming into school, we will have a supply list– it’s very simple!– directions about drop-off and pick-up and a series of videos showing procedures while at school. You could take a moment to check out this video from 4j that provides a short overview of changes at school during hybrid.

9th Grade Transition
South Eugene is committed to providing a seamless transition from middle school to high school where students feel both excited and prepared to begin their journey with us. Join us for an informative presentation about planning for 9th grade courses and high school success at South! Our administrators, 9th grade counselor, and 9th grade transition coordinator look forward to sharing information and going through the course selection (forecasting) process in preparation for the 2021-2022 school year. 

The webinar will be held on Tuesday, March 30th from 7 PM – 8 PM and will be recorded for families who are unable to attend. 

In addition, the SEHS scheduling team will be virtually meeting with Roosevelt 8th grade students Thursday, April 1 and Friday, April 2 in science classes to complete forecasting.

Yearbook: We Need Your Help!
In a year like no other, it seems important to document our experience as a school, honoring student activities and taking a look at how we fared during the global pandemic of 2020-21. We are working to put together a yearbook… twenty or thirty years from now, this time will be one we look back upon with curiosity, shaking our heads at the enormity of it all. 

We need your help! To insure a variety of perspective, we are going to need a *lot* of photos. Please upload photos in the following categories in this google drive :

* Pets During Zoom 
* Stay-At-Home Hobbies
* Anything else you can think of!

Please clearly label your photos with:

Students Ride Transit for Free!
Lane Transit District (LTD) will continue allowing students to ride without a bus pass until September. For now, all students need to do to ride free is tell the driver that they are a 4J student. When LTD resumes fare collection, students can still ride for free, but only if they get a pass from their school. We will share more information about how to get a free pass as we near September. El distrito de tránsito de Lane (LTD) continuará a permitir que los estudiantes puedan usar el bus sin su pase hasta el mes de septiembre. Free Meals Shift to Weekly Delivery
Now, as students return to school buildings in a hybrid model, schools will serve daily meals to students attending school on-site each day, and shift to once-a-week delivery for distribution of other free youth meals.
Families can sign up for free weekly meal boxes to be delivered each Wednesday after spring break here.

Coffee Chat for 4J Parents
From February through June join a 4J social worker for coffee chats. Monthly themes will center around emotional wellbeing and community support.

Events will occur on the following days each month from 6 PM- 7 PM:

Sheldon – 1st Thursday of the month
Churchill – 2nd Thursday of the month
North – 3rd Thursday of the month
South – 4th Thursday of the month

Nominate “A Champion in Education” Today!
This school year is like no other. The pandemic has so greatly altered school operations and all aspects of our normal lives. Who is your champion in education through this year of unprecedented challenges? An inspiring teacher? An encouraging school secretary? A caring school counselor or nurse? A problem-solving tech support staff member? A dedicated nutrition services staff member? A principal who is an inspirational leader?

Now is the time to recognize their contributions by nominating them for an ACE (A Champion in Education) Award!

Hello Roosevelt Parents. Southside Chess is hopeful that we will have at least quasi-normal, in-person school next fall. In that case, we should be able to have our after-school chess club, as before. Meanwhile, your child can get a head start with chess by participating in our on-line classes and games. We have beginner, intermediate and advanced level offerings.

Music Lessons with the Shedd Community Music School
Spring Term Classes & Lessons
Apr. 5 – Jun. 11, 2021

The Shedd Music School is offering a variety classes for students of all ages! Young students can discover new instruments and explore their creativity in The Music Box, teens and adults can learn Mariachi with two different Mariachi del Shedd ensembles! As always, students of all ages and interests are invited to take private or semi-private lessons on a variety of instruments.

As we continue into spring term, our focus is to keep our students and faculty as safe as possible while still fostering a sense of community within our music school. In accordance with state guidance, classrooms are regularly disinfected, all classes will be limited to 10 students, and all faculty, staff and students will be wearing face coverings in classes and public areas. More detailed guidance regarding masking and distancing is available on request to the school registrar.

Private Lessons
Monday-Friday 9:15a-5:45 PM
 Private lessons may be started at any time and are ongoing, throughout the year. Generally lessons are scheduled weekly and range from ½, ¾ to 1 hour in length. Our goal is that music-making becomes a fun and cherished part of everyday life. Students of any age and ability are encouraged to experiment with different instruments, instructors, musical styles and other music-related subjects. Students are never required to perform in front of others, but may elect to share their learning during term-end recitals. Currently we offer lessons on-site and online in a variety of different instruments.

The Music Box

The Shedd’s popular Music Box introduces the world of music with hands-on explorations of different instruments, songs, musical styles, and some music basics to help students discover the right “fit”.

This term, we are offering 3 sessions of our popular Music Box, each session limited to 10 students.

During each session our lead teacher will introduce a new song from our Music Box CD (ranging from spirituals, folk, jazz, American songbook, country, and more) followed by a hands-on introduction to a new instrument, movement style, or music craft led by a Shedd Faculty member. Each song and instrument will be presented in a multi-dimensional context of film, history, geography, nature, and language, making every musical workshop rich, educational and fun! Classes will also include a basic introduction to note-reading, music theory, and a bit of American music history!

Mariachi del Shedd
Introductory

Calling all mariachis! Join Fernell López and other middle and high school violinists, guitarists, trumpet players and singers to participate Eugene’s Mariachi del Shedd. Adventurous players can try out the unique fretless bass-line guitarrón and higher-pitched vihuela too. These instruments are available to rent for those interested in trying something new. The class will meet on Tuesday evenings with select sectionals on Friday evenings to help hone their craft. The group will learn traditional mariachi song forms, such as the bolero, canción, ranchera, son, huapango, and danzón, and favorite songs, such as, “El Rey”, “De Colores”, “Volver” and more. At the end of each school term, the mariachi will perform at The Shedd for family and friends and at least one other place in the community!

Do you play guitar, trumpet, violin, Guitarron, or vihuela? Are you interested in Mariachi music and continuing honing your skills in this unique genre? Marichi del Shedd continuing is for teens and young adults who already know their way around their instruments, and are interested in playing Mariachi. This group will learn more advanced music such as “Guadalajara”, “La Negra”, “El Zopilote Mojado”, and more! Mariachi del Shedd will meet regularly on Thursday evenings. This group regularly plays concerts at The Shedd and around our community.

FINANCIAL AID
The school offers need-based financial aid for youth and adult students alike, thanks to the generosity of donors and corporate sponsors, so that cost is not a barrier to learning music. Confidential financial aid application forms can be downloaded online (below) or picked up at the Registrar’s office. Submit the appropriate form for either a class or private lessons to the Registrar.

Mental Health Support
If you or a loved one is struggling with mental health right now, please check out these links for support. You are LOVED, we miss you, and can’t wait until we are all back together again!

HOOTS (Helping Out Our Teens in Schools) is offering mental health support by phone for students, families, and staff of 4J high schools during school closures. The phone line is accessible from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM Monday through Friday and is staffed by crisis counselors who normally work HOOTS clinic or work on CAHOOTS. Video support is available from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM on weekdays and is accessed by emailing hoots@whitebirdclinic.org with your name and preferred time. HOOTS is able to provide short term counseling and mental health support, resource referrals and OHP sign up. Students, families and staff of 4J please call (541)246-2342.

A chat-line for students. Teens are available to help daily from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM Pacific Time via call, text, chat or email (adults are available by phone at all other times).
