Roosevelt School News
A Message from the Principals
Greetings, RMS families!
This is the last full week before the end of trimester two. You– and your students!– are now close to ? the way through the school year. The last term promises to be exciting and fast-paced as our community begins to open up and mask mandates are lifted.

As we mentioned last week and now with less than two weeks to go in the term, this is a great time for students and parents to check grades in Canvas, meet with teachers, and turn in missing work. Thursday, March 17th is the final grading day of the trimester and Friday, March 18th is a teacher work day. Many teachers will set deadlines for students to turn in work by the end of this week so students can have a strong finish to the term. There’s still lots of time to take action and we would suggest reminding your student to check in with teachers, stay after school or come early to make sure they end confidently.

And, speaking of confidence… after our MLK, Jr. Assembly two weeks ago, we opened conversations in House last week with the question: What can we do individually and collectively to make our school feel safer and more inclusive? Students, though by and large enjoying being back at school, are fretting about how they see peers act and interact at school. General themes in conversations across 25 separate House settings included students sharing they are uncomfortable to speak up and say something if they see something. Many students also are concerned about a lack of compassion and kindness they see peers exhibit daily, vulgar language and slurs happening in the hallways, and the impact of social media on their daily lives. We’ll be addressing these and other concerns in the weeks to come and working together to create a better upstander culture so students can be more self-assured and confident each and every day.

We’ll now throw another variable in for students’ transition back as the mask mandate is lifted in schools. Masks are now optional in schools beginning March 14th. Undoubtedly, we’ll see a continuum of responses from families, staff and students, from stress and worry to relief and excitement. We’ll work to normalize these responses and support student and staff choice. Here’s the latest information from the district and in short:

* Got Covid?  Isolation still required for staff and students.
* Exposed to Covid? Quarantine is not required.
* Covid case in school? Contract tracing is no longer required though families will be notified of close contacts.
* Need a test? Testing kits are still available when students and staff exhibit symptoms and the weekly testing program will continue.

Thanks, as always, for your support. And, as always, thanks for reaching out about your observations and ideas!
Our best,
Courtney and Mike

Guest Speakers Wanted
Hello RMS Parents and Families!

I am reaching out to all of you for possible contacts! Now that some of the COVID restrictions are lifting, we are able to bring in guest speakers to our classrooms. Each guest will need to complete a safety protocol which includes showing proof of vaccination. I like to invite several guest speakers from various career fields in Trimester 3 to talk about their work with my AVID class (maybe someone who enjoys and / or is skilled at interacting with middle schoolers)! This allows students to directly ask questions from someone actually doing the work, and hopefully be motivated and inspired to consider and pursue a future career that will be of high interest to them! I surveyed my AVID students for a list of potential career opportunities. I would greatly appreciate it if you could pass along any awesome potential contacts you may have in one or more of the following varied fields.

OSAS Testing is Back!
Prior to the pandemic, the state of Oregon required all schools to offer the Oregon Statewide Assessment System (OSAS), a series of assessments to gauge student performance. During school closures in 2020 and 2021, Oregon first suspended and then limited state testing requirements.

Now that we are back to school in person, we are returning to a regular testing schedule. Students test in English language arts and math in grades 6, 7 and 8 and in science in grade 8. Roosevelt will most likely begin testing in April and May with more detailed schedules to be sent after spring break.

If you have questions about your school’s testing dates, your student’s test scores or your school’s report card, please call or email Kelly Ayres: ayres_k@4j.lane.edu or 541-790-8508. Thank you for partnering with us to help your student succeed in school and beyond.

School choice requests will be accepted in an order determined by lottery.

To be included in the lottery, non-district residents must apply between March 1 and 31. All students who want to obtain a transfer must apply, including new incoming siblings and students who have moved but want to stay enrolled at our school.

Spencer View Apartment Streets/Lanes Not Open to Roosevelt Drop Off or Pick Up
Please remember the Spencer View Apartments, across 24th from Roosevelt, are not open to Roosevelt families for drop off or pick up. Roosevelt families have been observed:

1. parking in the fire lane between the tennis courts and the apartments
2. using the apartments’ streets and lanes as shortcuts between Patterson and 24th
3. speeding through the complex.

Please remember, parking or even stopping in a fire lane is illegal. This is private property and not a short cut to Roosevelt. Small children play outside.

Let’s be good neighbors and stay out of the Spencer View Apartment complex.

Roosevelt’s New Mailbox
You may have noticed Roosevelt’s new mailbox next to the pause parking lane in the parking lot. This is a private mail box intended only for USPS delivery of school mail to Roosevelt. Please do not leave your outgoing mail in this box, as it will not be picked up or delivered.

Roosevelt Track and Field 2022
The Roosevelt 2022 track and field season starts soon. Any current Roosevelt student interested in participating in track and field should pick up all the required forms in the office or print them from this site. Track practices will most likely begin in April at 3:45pm in the Roosevelt big gym. The practice schedule will be available soon, but in past years, practice has been held daily. Practice is generally 3:45-5:00 or 5:30pm. The schedule for all dual meets, as well as the sub-district meet and district meet, will also be available from the school district soon.

Student athletes must be present at no less than two practices during the week to participate in that week’s track meet. Our team is open to all – experienced track and field athletes and beginners, as well.

State law requires that student-athletes complete sports physical exams every two years when participating in athletics. Therefore, if the athlete’s last sports physical examination expires before the end of the season in late May, 2022, a new one must be completed before any participation, either in practices or in meets, is permitted. So, if your student-athlete’s last sports examination occurred prior to May 26, 2020, then you should get them scheduled for a sports physical now so there will be no delay in starting practices in March with the rest of the team. Copies of the sports physical are available here or in the Roosevelt office. The sports physical forms, completed and signed by your student-athlete’s medical care provider, should be submitted to the school office, along with all of the other required forms, found here. Hard copies of all required forms are also available in the Roosevelt office.

School District 4J charges a $100 per student-athlete participation fee to cover the costs of running the middle school track and field program in Eugene School District 4J. We ask that each family pay as much as they are able. Partial and full scholarships are available based upon individual/family need.  WE DO NOT WANT MONEY TO PREVENT ANYONE FROM PARTICIPATING!  Contact the school secretary (541-790-8544) for information about scholarships. In addition, donations to cover Roosevelt track team jerseys, tee shirts and equipment will be greatly appreciated. All checks should be made payable to Roosevelt.

Proof of insurance is required for all student-athletes. If your student is not fully covered by insurance carried by the parent/guardian, then inquire in the Roosevelt office about School Time student accident insurance available through Myers-Stevens & Toohey. Application forms are available online.

There are also numerous opportunities for parents to volunteer.  Information about volunteering is included in the packet of track and field forms found here.

Being part of the track team at Roosevelt is important in a variety of ways. First, it provides a healthy activity that many of our students need in our current world of technology and video games. Second, it teaches each athlete the importance of being part of a team. Finally it gives our students a chance to connect and foster positive, supporting relationships with people, both students and staff, they may not normally interact with during the regular school day. Required paperwork is available here or in the Roosevelt office. All completed forms must be turned in at the office before students may begin practice. If you have questions, please contact the school secretary, Karen Kingzett, 541-790-8544 or kingzett@4j.lane.edu.
