RMS Commitment Statement: New Signage in the Forum
Thanks to a generous grant from Parents at Roosevelt and ongoing conversation and dialog with various stakeholding groups across the school, Roosevelt’s Commitment Statement now hangs in our forum for all to see. The statement was developed more than a decade ago and over the course of distance learning, we shared it with Site Council, PAR, Student Affinity Groups, RMS Staff Leadership, and our peer leaders to gather input and impressions and to support language that sends a clear message about belonging at Roosevelt. The sign is a welcome addition to our RMS aesthetic and an important statement about what we believe and value at Roosevelt Middle School. We can’t wait for our community to see it!

Mental Health Resources – from your Admin and Counseling Team
**Activation Warning– Suicide***

In the past five months, eleven young people– younger than age 24– have died by suicide in Lane County, several of them in our South region. These events meet the CDC’s definition of a suicide cluster– an unexpected number of deaths in our region in this timeframe. There is no evidence to suggest these deaths are linked and on average, 10-12 youth die by suicide in Lane County each year.

No students at our school have died by suicide related to the following information, and we know it is likely we have students who have heard about or been impacted by recent deaths. Suicide prevention is everyone’s business, and we are asking for your help in creating as much protection in our school community as we can. According to the 2016 Lane County Student Wellness Survey, 24% of 8th-graders and 20% of 11th grade students in Lane County have seriously considered suicide.

Pandemic living has taught us the importance of talking about and addressing mental health and Lane County schools are responding. We want to offer information and resources to assist you in talking with your student about mental health. Linked here, you will find a Lane County resource list for families. This guide from national experts is also an excellent tool for talking about suicide with children. More resources and information at: https://preventionlane.org/prevention-topics/suicide-prevention.

What you can do?
Our intention is not to create panic, but to normalize talking about feelings of anxiety, depression, sadness and grief and to ask our community to help prevent future deaths:
* Ask your child(ren) directly about suicide.
* If they tell you they have thought about suicide, do your best to remain calm and listen carefully and thoughtfully with curiosity and without judgement.
* Access resources for your child(ren).
* Lock up or remove firearms, medication, and alcohol in your home.

While the topic of suicide can be difficult to discuss, we know being about to talk about suicide thoughts or feelings helps protect our young people. It does not increase risk to ask directly about suicide, and we know that often the opportunity to safely talk about suicide thoughts is a source of relief.
If you would like more support for your student, please reach out to our counselor and admin team or your student’s House teacher. Thank you for being willing to join in our community’s efforts to increase safety and wellness for our students.

Community Suicide & Grief Event on April 14th
On April 14th, Lane County Public Health will host a Community Resilience Forum at the Hilyard Community Center from 6:30 PM -7:30 PM. Our community has been deeply impacted by suicide over the past few months and Lane County Public Health is deploying a variety of resources in the community to support those in need. This forum will be an important element in that response to publicize this work and invite people into conversation on this topic. At the forum there will be a panel of experts in grief, trauma, and suicide prevention share their perspectives on how community members can respond to and support the needs of their families and loved ones. They will also discuss how people can get involved in proactive strategies to support community health and wellness in the future.

* Spanish and ASL interpreters will be available on site.
* The event will be recorded and can be viewed the following day on preventionlane.org.
* Child care will also be available.

Contact Roger Brubaker – Lane County Public Health Suicide Prevention Coordinator with any questions at roger.brubaker@lanecountyor.gov

Annual Yellow Jacket Trapping Notification
Every summer yellow jackets become a safety issue for 4J students, staff and community members, requiring risky nest removal, extensive labor and occasional chemical treatments. As a preventative measure, Facilities is placing non-toxic pheromone yellow jacket traps out at Roosevelt to reduce the number of nests that are established annually. Though these traps are intrinsically safe for staff, students and beneficial pollinators, they are considered a pesticide by ODA and we are required to notify all staff, faculty, adult students, parents or guardians of minor students of their use.

Attention: 8th-Grade Families!

Attention: 8th-Grade Families!
8th Grade Promotion Pictures

Tuesday, April 19 is picture day for 8th graders.

group picture of the entire 8th grade class will be taken during House (9:55 AM – 10:25 AM).

All 8th graders will have an individual picture taken during periods 2-6 (10:35 AM – 3:35 PM). Students will have their pictures taken during their social studies classes. Teachers have the schedule and know when to send your student down for pictures, so students do not need to worry or wonder about when to leave class.

Individual pictures will appear on students’ promotion certificates, which will be distributed during promotion on June 16. Unfortunately, there will not be an opportunity for makeups and outside pictures cannot be used for the certificate, so we hope every 8th grader can be present on picture day. These pictures have nothing to do with yearbook pictures, they are only for promotion certificates.

Both pictures are available for purchase through Lifetouch, but this is completely optional and has no impact on the printing of your student’s promotion certificate. Advisors will distribute picture packets in House and they are also available in the office, or go online at mylifetouch.com (individual picture ID: EVTFQHBF2; group picture ID: FO011044T0).

SEHS Transition from Middle School Info

Guest Speakers Wanted
Hello RMS Parents and Families!
I am reaching out to all of you for possible contacts! Now that some of the COVID restrictions are lifting, we are able to bring in guest speakers to our classrooms. Each guest will need to complete a safety protocol which includes showing proof of vaccination. I like to invite several guest speakers from various career fields in Trimester 3 to talk about their work with my AVID class (maybe someone who enjoys and / or is skilled at interacting with middle schoolers)! This allows students to directly ask questions from someone actually doing the work, and hopefully be motivated and inspired to consider and pursue a future career that will be of high interest to them! I surveyed my AVID students for a list of potential career opportunities. I would greatly appreciate it if you could pass along any awesome potential contacts you may have in one or more of the following varied fields.

Thank you in advance for your assistance and support!

Roosevelt Track and Field 2022
Head Coach for Track and Field
Roosevelt has hired Trevor Betenson as head coach for the upcoming season. Although Trevor is new to the head coach position he’s not new to Roosevelt track and field. He’s been with the program since 2017.

His daughter Capri is a 7th grader at Roosevelt and he has been involved in competing or coaching track the past 30 years. He was a hurdler and sprinter in high school and competed for Utah State University as a hurdler and sprinter where he was a two year team captain. He is an accountant by trade and is the Chief Financial Officer for Palo Alto Software. He has been coaching High School and Middle School track for many years.

It’s not too late to sign up. Practice starts April 11 and will be everyday, Monday through Thursday. The first meet of the season will be the week of May 2nd and finish with a sub-district meet June 2.
Please sign up by April 18th so you don’t miss any of the meets!

Track and Field Sign Up Info
The Roosevelt 2022 track and field season starts soon. Any current Roosevelt student interested in participating in track and field should pick up all the required forms in the office or print them from this site. Track practices begin April 11th at 3:45 PM, ending at 5:15 PM. Practice will meet Monday through Thursdays each week. The schedule for all dual meets, as well as the sub-district meet and district meet, will also be available from the school district soon.

Student athletes must be present at no less than two practices during the week to participate in that week’s track meet. Our team is open to all – experienced track and field athletes and beginners, as well.

State law requires that student-athletes complete sports physical exams every two years when participating in athletics. Therefore, if the athlete’s last sports physical examination expires before the end of the season in late May, 2022, a new one must be completed before any participation, either in practices or in meets, is permitted. So, if your student-athlete’s last sports examination occurred prior to May 26, 2020, then you should get them scheduled for a sports physical now so there will be no delay in starting practices in March with the rest of the team. Copies of the sports physical are available here or in the Roosevelt office. The sports physical forms, completed and signed by your student-athlete’s medical care provider, should be submitted to the school office, along with all of the other required forms, found here. Hard copies of all required forms are also available in the Roosevelt office.

School District 4J charges a $100 per student-athlete participation fee to cover the costs of running the middle school track and field program in Eugene School District 4J. We ask that each family pay as much as they are able. Partial and full scholarships are available based upon individual/family need.  WE DO NOT WANT MONEY TO PREVENT ANYONE FROM PARTICIPATING!  Contact the school secretary (541-790-8544) for information about scholarships. In addition, donations to cover Roosevelt track team jerseys, tee shirts and equipment will be greatly appreciated. All checks should be made payable to Roosevelt.

Proof of insurance is required for all student-athletes. If your student is not fully covered by insurance carried by the parent/guardian, then inquire in the Roosevelt office about School Time student accident insurance available through Myers-Stevens & Toohey. Application forms are available online.

There are also numerous opportunities for parents to volunteer.  Information about volunteering is included in the packet of track and field forms found here.

Being part of the track team at Roosevelt is important in a variety of ways. First, it provides a healthy activity that many of our students need in our current world of technology and video games. Second, it teaches each athlete the importance of being part of a team. Finally it gives our students a chance to connect and foster positive, supporting relationships with people, both students and staff, they may not normally interact with during the regular school day. Required paperwork is available here or in the Roosevelt office. All completed forms must be turned in at the office before students may begin practice. If you have questions, please contact the school secretary, Karen Kingzett, 541-790-8544 or kingzett@4j.lane.edu.

Volunteers Needed
LSU and APISU Advisors
RMS is seeking active and engaged volunteers who can step in to support a Latinx Student Union (LSU) and an Asian and Pacific Islander Student Union (APISU). Currently, we run both a Black Student Union (BSU) and a Native American Student Union (NASU) with advisors from the NAACP and the 4j Natives program, respectively.

Participation in our student unions is focused on strengthening identity through examining traditions and cultural values, developing leadership skills, fostering community building, being responsive to social justice issues, and providing support for the overall well-being and academic and social success of our students.
We would like for our students who identify with the Latinx and Asian and Pacific Islander communities to be able to meet in affinity… please contact the front office for additional information. Thanks for your ideas and support!

Track and Field
Please contact Laura Fuhriman at fuhriman_l@4j.lane.edu if you are interested in volunteering during our Track and Field season.

OSAS Testing is Back!
Prior to the pandemic, the state of Oregon required all schools to offer the Oregon Statewide Assessment System (OSAS), a series of assessments to gauge student performance. During school closures in 2020 and 2021, Oregon first suspended and then limited state testing requirements.

Now that we are back to school in person, we are returning to a regular testing schedule. Students test in English language arts and math in grades 6, 7 and 8 and in science in grade 8. Roosevelt will most likely begin testing in April and May with more detailed schedules to be sent after spring break.

If you have questions about your school’s testing dates, your student’s test scores or your school’s report card, please call or email Kelly Ayres: ayres_k@4j.lane.edu or 541-790-8508. Thank you for partnering with us to help your student succeed in school and beyond.
