Roosevelt School News

A Message from the Principals

Greetings, RMS Families:

We hope the long weekend was enjoyable!

As we kick off trimester three with a week to go before spring break, we encourage your student to start strong, despite the week interruption. Talking to teachers now, setting goals and focusing on daily habits and activities is the best way to do this… with just one term to go, the spring will move quickly into summer.

We’ll connect more after spring break… in the meantime, we hope you have a restful and rejuvenating week away from school.

Our best,

Courtney and Mike

New Middle School Schedule in Works

Our district has convened a team of teachers, licensed specialists and district leaders to review new schedule options for middle schools to better serve students in grades 6–8 starting next fall. Your thoughts will help the team with its recommendation to district leaders, who will make a final decision before the end of this school year.

To guide its recommendations, the team has identified the following priorities that will be used to weigh the proposed options under its review:

  • Center the unique needs — cognitive, emotional, linguistical, physical, psychological, and social — of middle school students through choice, exploration, and unique class offerings;
  • Ensure flexibility during the school day for students that provide choice and access to a variety of supports (curricular extensions plus interventions, Advisory, affinity groups, clubs, activities, enrichment, etc.);
  • Focus specifically on social-emotional learning, which is rooted in strong and healthy peer and adult relationships;
  • Prioritize planning and collaboration time for professional staff to increase collective teacher efficacy and student achievement;
  • Maintain or decrease class size: Class size remains a concern, and shouldn’t be significantly impacted by this schedule change.

We welcome your ideas and suggestions at this link. Please take a moment while you’re there to review and rank the thoughts of others. We appreciate your time and support!

Reporting and Responding to Racial Harassment

On February 28, Roosevelt held a listening session with our Black African-American families about the prevalence of the n-word and microaggressions BIPOC students face in our school. Eugene 4j held a similarly-styled session on March 7 at the Campbell Senior Center. The themes of each meeting were similar and we want all our families to know and understand our school response when we have an instance of hate or bigoted speech or a report of racial slurs.

We are guided by several 4j Board policies and a Universal Response Protocol. Board policies that form the foundation of our response include: Nondiscrimination – AC and Discrimination Complaint Procedure AC-ARHate Symbols and Bias Incidents – ACBHate Symbol and Bias Incidents, Response ACB-ARRacial Harassment – ACC.

When we learn about situations– and we often rely solely on staff and students to report to administration through several different avenues, including an anonymous form– we act. After we acknowledge receipt of the report to students or families, we start tracking the incident. Our immediate response is to insure the safety and well-being of the person who has been impacted and to consider the need for immediate support for those involved, including any witnesses or other community members.

If we are investigating a potential incident of bias speech or a racial slur, we consider race, culture, language, sex, gender identity, disability status and intersectionality to determine how to move forward. Families may receive notification that we are investigating and we review policy to determine whether an incident might be a violation of district policy. We investigate the incident fully, ensuring that due process rights are upheld.

As we investigate, we also plan for safety and support. We consult with the students who were harmed and include family and community members to discuss culturally and linguistically responsive steps. We develop a plan to the extent desired by those harmed and work directly with those who caused harm. Our main goal is always to educate, address the impact of the action, and prioritize learning unless there is a risk to health or safety and/or it is a repeated violation with the intent to cause harm and previous measures have not been effective. We do suspend students for using hurtful and hateful language repeatedly.

We also continue to implement preventative measures. If we are seeing patterns and repetitive behaviors across campus, then we provide school-wide opportunities for learning and understanding to prevent instances of hate and bias speech from occuring in the future. This was our response in January when we saw a significant increase in the use of the n-word at school and White students asking for the ‘n-pass’ from students of color. We continue to monitor and adjust our response as we learn of incidents and remain vigilant in living our school commitment: The Roosevelt Middle School staff stands together against bigotry, harassment, bullying, and any form of discrimination.

When we know, we act. And, in the case of racial slurs, we know it is happening more often than we realize which places an onus on us to respond to a greater extent. If your students are reporting anything to you, please let us know as soon as possible. We’ve also asked our staff to interrupt and circle back with students rather than risk missing potential harm. We can’t and won’t hear everything, and it takes all of us stepping in to create a safe and responsive school environment.

RMS Parent Equity Group Meeting

Please join us on Tuesday, March 21st for our next equity group meeting.  Our conversation will center on the experiences of our BIPOC students in relationship with our entire school community.  Discussions from the February 28 RMS and March 7 4j listening sessions will continue across race and across differences for greater connection, deeper understanding, and joint action planning.  If you’ve been thinking about attending an RMS Parent Equity Group meeting, we look forward to welcoming you in this critical conversation.

Showcase: Ways to Contribute

Showcase is back! PAR and the whole Roosevelt community are excited to host a year end celebration event to support our school on Friday April 21st from 6:30 PM -8:30 PM. There will be student work displayed, live music and drama shorts, games and prizes, a photobooth, food and drinks, silent auction and raffles, and more that you and your family will not want to miss!

To make such an awesome event a success, we need your help. There are several ways that you can do so:

  • Sign up to help with the preparations including making phone calls and picking up auction items, making signs, and organizing supplies…Showcase Preparation Sign Up.
  • Sign up to take a shift to help at the Showcase event itself using the provided link. OSAS Testing is back!

Prior to the pandemic, the state of Oregon required all schools to offer the Oregon Statewide Assessment System (OSAS), a series of assessments to gauge student performance. During school closures in 2020 and 2021, Oregon first suspended and then limited state testing requirements. In 2022, state testing returned in full and this year, we’ll also see the full complement of testing in English Language Arts and Math and for 8th grade students, Science.

Roosevelt will most likely begin testing in mid-May with more detailed schedules to be sent after spring break. We respect each individual family choice about testing. Roosevelt does use the data we receive from testing to plan for the following academic year and to support school-wide goals for curriculum and instruction.

For more information about the test and families’ options, please visit the district’s website: https://www.4j.lane.edu/2022/11/state-testing-opt-out-form-available/.  For more information from the state, including test examples, please go to: https://osasportal.org/

Planning an Extended Absence? Please Fill Out Our Form!

The district 4J Attendance Committee has created a consistent 4J Pre-arranged student absence request form.  Parents and guardians, thank you for completing this form for all absences that are 3 or more days in length. Parents or guardians only need to complete the first section and then turn into the office. Don’t have your student’s permanent ID number? Not to worry! Our office staff can assist with that once the form is submitted.

What about Make-up Work?

This winter, we’ve seen many students out for extended periods, whether it’s a continuation of COVID-related absences, the flu or other sickness, or family trips.

While it’s difficult for students to be away from school for any period, we fully understand and support the various reasons students may have to be absent and encourage you to continue calling into our attendance line when your student must be absent.

If your student is sick, we want them to get better soon! For this reason, we don’t necessarily recommend trying to stay caught up with class work while away from school. Students can access Canvas while out, but Canvas isn’t always up-to-date, nor does it fully capture classroom experiences.

As a result, we recommend reminding your student to either email their teachers or message them in Canvas. Though they may not get an immediate response, it does alert teachers that a student is eager to get caught up. When students return from an absence, we also recommend they meet with their teachers to make a plan to get caught up in a way that feels reasonable and manageable. Students might need to come early or stay later one or two days after an extended absence to get caught up.

Thanks for your support and flexibility!
