REVISED SCHOOL CALENDAR
Attached is a revised school calendar that takes into consideration the make-up days and trimester schedule changes in response to our December snow days.
ACTIVITY NIGHT
The date for the next student Activity Night has changed.  It will be on Friday, February 14.
VOLUNTEER NEEDS
School Choice Tours
It’s that time of year again when we invite community members to visit Roosevelt to learn about all it has to offer their students.  Our first school choice presentation and parent led tour will be Friday, January 31st.  Chris and Mike will be sharing information about RMS from 9:45-10:15 and then RMS parents will lead tours of the school from 10:15-11:00.  We need 6 parents to help lead tours.  Please contact Julie, marks_j@4j.lane.edu with any questions and your availability.
Garden Club Needs You!
Are you passionate about gardening?  Do you love working with kids?  Our garden club coordinator is looking for an assistant to help run garden club.  Please contact Sean Camblin, camblin@comcast.net or Julie, marks_j@4j.lane.edu with your interest and any questions that you may have.
Activity Night is Friday, February 14th!
We need many of you fabulous volunteers to create a fun filled evening for our students.  Set up help is needed 3:30-4:30 and chaperones are needed 6-9pm.  Please contact (Ms.) Mitchell Finkle, mitchellfinkle@yahoo.com with your availability.
2 PARENT(S) VOLUNTEERS NEED FOR TRADER JOE’S FLOWER PICKUP
We need 2 volunteers to pick up flowers at Trader Joe’s every Monday morning.  This will take between 2 – 3 hours.  The volunteer(s) will pick up the flowers, bring them to Roosevelt and arrange them in vases.  It’s a fun way to make a contribution to our well-deserving teaching staff here at Roosevelt.  Please contact Blanche at colson_b@4j.lane.edu if you can help.
EARN MONEY FOR RMS
Kendall’s Drive for Education 2nd quarter kicks off on January 13 and goes through March 9.  Below is a refresher of how to earn points for Roosevelt.
Want to help Roosevelt? Here’s how:
Earn points at Kendall dealerships for sales, service or even just saying hello (point breakdown below).  The schools that earn the most points receive additional funds!  Even if your school doesn’t earn the most points, both Bethel Education Foundation and Eugene Education Foundation will receive donations that will benefit all local public schools in Eugene!
·         Stop by any Kendall dealership and say “hi!” 50 points
·         Test drive at any Kendall dealership 500 points
·         Vote for Roosevelt on Facebook and earn 100 points per day

·         Service, maintenance and parts at Kendall dealerships: $1 spent = 1 Point

Thank you to all who participated in the Track Town Pizza fund raiser for Roosevelt during the snow days.  Your efforts resulted in a Track Town donation to Roosevelt in the amount of $86.65.  Due to the low turn out because of the weather, Track Town has rescheduled this fund raiser for later in the year so more families can participate.
MLK DAY EVENT
Please come out and join in the 2014 Annual Community MLK event on Monday, January 20, 2014.
The Community March starts at 9:30 am (begins in the Science Factory parking lot next to Autzen Stadium ends at Shedd Institute)
The evening event will be at 6:30 at Lane Community College in the Ragozzino Performance Hall, Building 6.  Guest Speaker is Giancarlo Esposito, best known for his iconic portrayal of Gustavo “Gus” Fring in AMC’s critically acclaimed award winning series “Breaking Bad.” Currently, he co-stars in NBC’s hit drama series “Revolution.”
A REMINDER FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE
Remember, flu season is here and documented cases have started to occur at Roosevelt.  The best cure for the flu is prevention and good hygiene. It’s not too late to get a flu shot!  Wash your hands, cover your cough, and stay at home if you are ill.  Remember to keep students home if they have a fever and until their temperature is normal without fever relieving medications.

You can help Roosevelt earn donations from Fred Meyer by linking your Fred Meyer Rewards Card to Roosevelt at www.fredmeyer.com/communityrewards.  You can search for Roosevelt by name or by our non-profit number, 86929.  You still earn your Rewards Points, Fuel Points and Rebates, but also earn donations for Roosevelt.

You might be interested in Eugene International High School!  Eugene IHS is an award-winning alternative high school in international studies for students in grades 9-12.  Located at Churchill, Sheldon and South Eugene, the school is open via district lottery to any student who wishes to attend.  If you are curious about the world, love languages, and learning in a close-knit, unique environment that is both challenging and supportive, consider Eugene IHS as your high school choice.
Admission into Eugene IHS is through the 4J District lottery process; all students must fill out a School Choice application.  School choice applications for 2014-15 will be available in January.  Go to the 4J District school choice web page for school choice deadlines and applications:http://www.4j.lane.edu/choice.
IMPORTANT DATES for the 2013-2014 School Year:

February 28     In-District deadline to submit School Choice Applications for high school lottery

Immersion students will be enrolled in Eugene IHS without the lottery process. However, immersion students do need to submit the Eugene IHS enrollment form to the Eugene IHS office at South or Sheldon by the February 28 deadline. This form will be included in a special mailing to immersion families.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE: MAKE-UP DAYS ADDED, NO-SCHOOL DAYS MOVED
Dear parents and guardians,
Eugene 4J schools were closed for students for four days in December due to snow and ice. The snow days will be made up on days that originally had been scheduled to be no-school days for unpaid furlough: March 31, April 17 and 18, and May 23.
The end of the second trimester and the grading and professional development/planning days at that time have been postponed by one week.
These changes mean that 4J students will not lose any school days as a result of December’s weather and the three trimesters will be balanced in length.
SCHOOL CALENDAR CHANGES:
• March 13: Regular school day (was no-school staff work day for middle and high schools)
• March 14: Regular school day (was no-school staff work day for all schools)
• March 20: No school at middle and high schools (staff work day)
• March 21: No school at all schools (staff work day); end of second trimester
• March 31: Regular school day (was no-school furlough day); first day of third trimester
• April 17: Regular school day (was no-school furlough day)
• April 18: Regular school day (was no-school furlough day)
• May 23: Regular school day (was no-school furlough day)
Thank you for your patience and understanding with these schedule changes due to last week’s hazardous weather.
