AFTER SCHOOL MATH SPRINGBOARD (REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS TOMORROW)
Last summer a number of our RMS families participated in Summer Springboard; a math and computer science summer camp. Reports from participants were overwhelmingly positive – students improved their math skills while enjoying outdoor activities and computer programming. This was a fee-based service, but scholarships were awarded. Given the popularity of Summer Springboard, 4J has partnered with them again to create an after school program which will be hosted at RMS immediately after school.
Math skills build upon themselves like bricks build in a wall. If you miss a few bricks on the way up you won’t have a strong foundation for what is to come. Success in middle school math is essential for success in high school math which is necessary for graduation (and higher SAT scores).

At Springboard After School students will attend a math class taught by a highly qualified high school math teacher who worked with our students last summer.  Participants will also attend computer-coding classes with Thinkersmith – 2013 winner of the Google Rise Award.
This program is customized to your student’s learning needs – so whether your student wants to speed up, firm up, or catch up, Springboard After School is a great option.
Springboard After School Program Details:
Who: Any students in grades 6-8
Class Size:  20 students
Days of the Week: TuesdayWednesday & Thursday.
Parents may choose between 2 or 3 days a week: Tue & Thur or TueWed and Thur.  
Start time: Immediately afterschool
End Time:  5:30pm each day
Dates: Classes run for 6 weeks beginning on Tuesday, February 4th and ending on March 13th
Registration Closes:  Friday, January 31st
Cost: There is a charge of $25 per day which includes all materials, small group instruction given by a highly qualified math teacher, computer programming taught by the award winning Thinkersmith and student incentives for attendance, work completion and accuracy. A limited number of need-based scholarships will be available. Call to enquire.

IMMUNIZATION REMINDER TO PARENTS 
Wednesday, Feburuary 19, 2014 is Oregon’s immunization exclusion day. Your student must be up-to-date on all required immunization by that day to attend school. About 40 RMS parents received reminders that their 7th grade student needed the 7th grade Tdap booster or other immunizations. Please bring documentation of the required immunization/s to the RMS office before 2/19/14 so that your student can attend school!
Immunizations are available at your doctors office and many local pharmacies, the Lane County Public Health Department at 541-682-4041, and the North and Churchill School Based Health Centers at 541-790-4445 or 541-790-5227.
 
Attention sixth grade parents: This is the ideal time for your sixth grade student to get the Tdap boosterIt protects your child and vulnerable babies and elderly  from Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis or whooping cough which is occurring at a high level in our community.

February is Give Kids a Smile month! Area dentist and hygenists donate time to clean teeth and give dental care for free!! Contact your school nurse at 541-790-8024 or the RMS office for an application.
ROOSEVELT SHOWCASE
Roosevelt’s biggest event of the year is quickly approaching!  Showcase 2014 is scheduled for Friday, May 2.  This year’s theme is Night at the Museum.  We have a goal of $25,000 to be raised and we need your help to make this happen! A Showcase planning meeting is scheduled for Monday, February 3, 5:30-6:30 pm.  Please plan to attend! If you would like to help, but cannot attend, please contact PAR Co-Coordinator, Dana Fleming, at alasaban@sbcglobal.net.
We are also gathering donations for the silent auction.  If you have a business, please consider donating.  Please also consider asking local businesses and individuals to donate toward that effort.
VOLUNTEER NEEDS
School Choice Tours
It’s that time of year again when we invite community members to visit Roosevelt to learn about all it has to offer their students.  Our first school choice presentation and parent led tour will be Friday, January 31st.  Chris and Mike will be sharing information about RMS from 9:45-10:15 and then RMS parents will lead tours of the school from 10:15-11:00.  We need 1 more parent to help lead tours in January.  We will also be needing 6 parents to lead tours on Friday, February 28th from 10:15-11:00.  Please contact Julie, marks_j@4j.lane.edu with any questions and your availability.
Garden Club Needs You!
Are you passionate about gardening?  Do you love working with kids?  Our garden club coordinator is looking for an assistant to help run garden club.  Please contact Sean Camblin, camblin@comcast.net or Julie, marks_j@4j.lane.edu with your interest and any questions that you may have.
Activity Night is Friday, February 14th!

1 more PARENT VOLUNTEER NEEDED FOR TRADER JOE’S FLOWER PICKUP
We need 1 more volunteer to pick up flowers at Trader Joe’s every Monday morning.  This will take between 2 – 3 hours.  The volunteer(s) will pick up the flowers, bring them to Roosevelt and arrange them in vases.  It’s a fun way to make a contribution to our well-deserving teaching staff here at Roosevelt.  Please contact Blanche at colson_b@4j.lane.edu if you can help.
VISION SCREENING
On Tuesday, February 11th our school nurse will be conducting a vision screening for all 6th graders during 3rd and 4th periods.  I am looking for 3 volunteers for each period.  The times are 11:15-12:20 (before lunch) and 1:15-2:20 (after lunch and house).  Please let me know if you can help out either (or both!) of these times-  marks_j@4j.lane.edu . Thanks for considering!
SUPER SATURDAYS IN FEBRUARY

Thank you to Mazzi’s Italian Restaurant and all families who participated in the fund raiser on January 13.  Because of your participation, Mazzi’s donated $299.88 to Roosevelt.  Thank you for your support.

ACTIVITY NIGHT
The date for the next student Activity Night has changed.  It will be on Friday, February 14.  There were several conflicts on the previously-scheduled night, including IHS Information Night at SEHS on February 6.

You might be interested in Eugene International High School!  Eugene IHS is an award-winning alternative high school in international studies for students in grades 9-12.  Located at Churchill, Sheldon and South Eugene, the school is open via district lottery to any student who wishes to attend.  If you are curious about the world, love languages, and learning in a close-knit, unique environment that is both challenging and supportive, consider Eugene IHS as your high school choice.
Admission into Eugene IHS is through the 4J District lottery process; all students must fill out a School Choice application.  School choice applications for 2014-15 will be available in January.  Go to the 4J District school choice web page for school choice deadlines and applications:http://www.4j.lane.edu/choice.

Immersion students will be enrolled in Eugene IHS without the lottery process. However, immersion students do need to submit the Eugene IHS enrollment form to the Eugene IHS office at South or Sheldon by the February 28 deadline. This form will be included in a special mailing to immersion families.
