RESEARCH in the 4J School District: Feeling Safe / Being Safe at School

Mahlum Architects has received approval from the 4J Instruction Department to ask for your participation in an important district-wide research project. Educational facility designers around the world hope to address school safety in a new, holistic way by understanding the diverse viewpoints of students, teachers and parents.

What is the process?

In order to understand what “feeling safe” means for different stakeholders at your school, we have created a brief 9-question anonymous survey in digital and printed formats. The survey questions have been pre-approved by the 4J Instruction Department. We ask that students, teachers and parents of grades 5-12 complete the questionnaire. We will analyze the results and develop recommendations for facility improvements that will be shared with school districts and planners nationwide.

How much time is required? When will this take place?

The survey should only take 5-10 minutes to complete. Ideally the survey takes place before spring break.

Who are we?

Mahlum Architects is a leader in educational facility design in the Pacific Northwest, and we have recently worked with your district on the new Roosevelt Middle School. René Berndt, Associate and K-12 Designer at Mahlum, is a member of the Association for Learning Environments (A4LE) and conducts research to improve learning environments.

WANTED: PICTURES FOR YEARBOOK

The yearbook team is looking for pictures of Roosevelt students playing extracurricular sports. If you have any good photos of your Roosevelt student playing sports outside of Roosevelt, then before the end of March, email a digital copy to the yearbook at jessica@gaiacreative.com.

SEND A NOTE IF YOUR STUDENT HAS AN APPOINTMENT DURING THE DAY

Please help us avoid interrupting classes. If your student needs to leave during the school day, please send a note to school with your student, including the time s/he should be excused from class and the reason for leaving. Your student should then show the note to the teacher at the beginning of class and excuse her/himself at the proper time. This is our preferred way of handling students needing to leave during the day. Thank you for handling this in advance and for helping us have fewer interruptions during instructional time.

NOMINATE “A CHAMPION IN EDUCATION” TODAY!

Who always makes a difference in your child’s school day?  An inspiring teacher? An encouraging school secretary? A dedicated volunteer? A principal who leads by example? A bus driver who always takes the time to listen? Now is the time to recognize their contributions through the annual ACE (A Champion in Education) Awards!

To nominate a 4J employee or volunteer who demonstrates excellence in education, go to The ACE Awards – nomination site. Every nominee will be honored at an awards ceremony in April, and one person in each category will win a $1,000 cash prize toward a project or program in their school.

Nominations must be submitted by Sunday, April 2..

The ACE Awards are a collaborative effort of the Eugene and Springfield chambers of commerce and the Eugene, Bethel and Springfield school districts.  The program is presented by Oregon Community Credit Union and supported by others from the local business community.
