Message from the Principal & Assistant Principal
Aaaaand, we’re back– and what an interesting first full week of school in the new year! We hope you and your family are well as we all navigate being back in the schedule and rhythm of school.
This is the only week in January with a flex Wednesday scheduled. After this week, we have two four-day weeks– the MLK, Jr. holiday next Monday, January 18, and a grading day– yes, midterms!– on Friday, January 29.
This week and next, we also have school choice events scheduled at both a district and school level. Please double-check the calendar, school websites, and your mail for special information… especially for our 8th-grade families, this is an important time of year to hear about high school options. After these events, if you have specific questions and would like to discuss next year with me or Mike, please let us know.
And, before we jump too far ahead to next year, in the coming weeks, we hope to be able to share more about the potential of returning to the building for limited in-person instruction and plans for a potential hybrid model in trimester three, should state and county metrics, along with district guidance, allow it. As always, we exist in a shifting landscape when it comes to school during the pandemic.
Have a great week,
Courtney and Mike

Hopefully, by next fall we will be back in (normal) school so we can have on-site chess club just like the old days. Until then, your child has an opportunity learn chess with our online classes. In talking to my teacher friends, it seems online classes in subjects like reading and language can be challenging, while math may be a little easier to teach that way. I have found teaching chess online has been very productive, and most of my current students are thriving.
If you would like to try chess for your child, you can find more information here:
https://www.southsidechess.com/online-classes.html, or contact Jerry Ramey at 541-232-0328 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
