Principal's Message

I hope this message finds you well! We had a great first full week with students last week, and we are looking forward to another week with them!

Cross Country season begins this week! We're happy to have Chris Watkins as our Head Coach and Teresa Barrington as our Assistant Coach. Chris set up a table at both lunches on Friday to recruit athletes and answer questions. It's not too late to sign up. More info on the RMS website at this link. Looking forward to a great season!

Last week, we had an extended House schedule for community building and technology lessons. This week, we begin our regular RMS bell schedule. In House this week we will be teaching and practicing our safety protocols.

Student safety is our highest priority, and we believe it is important to practice these safety procedures so we are as prepared as possible in the event of an emergency. We also believe strongly that fostering a sense of belonging and community in which all students feel welcomed, valued, and respected for who they are is a critical and important prevention measure. This week, students will learn about our standard response emergency protocols for hold, secure, shelter, lockdown, and evacuate. On Tuesday during House, we’ll practice hold and secure drills. and on Friday during House, we will practice lockdown, shelter, and evacuation drills.

Upcoming Event: We look forward to seeing parents/guardians and their students at Curriculum Night this Thursday, 9/18 from 6:00pm - 8:25pm. The schedule for the evening is linked here. Curriculum Night begins in the dining hall, where families will hear from the Principal, Assistant Principal, and Counselors. At 6:30 all families go to House, where parents/guardians will get their students’ schedules, hear from the House Advisor and from there, will attend all of their student’s classes for ten minutes each. Teachers will review content pertinent and specific to their class. Please ensure any questions pertain to the group as whole. If you have specific questions about your student, please contact teachers individually via email after Curriculum Night. We hope you will come in to meet your administrative team, our counselors, your student’s teachers, and to learn about your student’s classes.
Canvas Update

We encourage you to become a Canvas Observer for your student or students. Canvas Observer enhances engagement with your student’s academic journey, allowing you to read announcements and view grades and assignment due dates, among other features.

To become an Observer, all new and returning users must activate their account before they can start using Canvas Observer. To activate your account, please complete the following steps:
  • Visit 4J’s Canvas for Families webpage and click on “Forgot Password?”
  • Enter the email you provided your child’s school and then click the “Request Password” box
  • Enter a password after clicking the reset link you receive in your email
  • Return to the Canvas for Families webpage to log in with your username and new password

Canvas Observer will not allow you to activate more than one account if parents/guardians have the same email address on file for their student. In this case, contact Laura Fuhriman (fuhriman_l@4j.lane.edu) and provide a unique email address for each parent or guardian associated with your student. Supporting instructions are found on this flyer, linked here

Please contact Laura Fuhriman (fuhriman_l@4j.lane.edu) if you have any questions or run into any problems.

The Start of the Year…

... is exciting and can be expensive! We invite anyone who needs additional support to contact Laura Furhriman (fuhriman_l@4j.lane.edu) or Alison Wagner (wagner_a@4j.lane.edu). Our school supply list is linked here... and though we do our best to provide every student with the supplies they need, we could also use your generous support at the beginning of the year. If you’d like to make a thoughtful donation, you can do so at RMS School Pay by clicking here. This is also where you can purchase the RMS Yearbook and support our RMS Library. We truly appreciate any additional funding from our families, for our families.

Lastly, as mentioned last week, September is Attendance Awareness Month. Starting the school year with consistent attendance helps students feel welcomed, connected, and ready to learn. Please see below for some helpful habits on supporting positive attendance.

We hope you and your family have a great week! Please do not hesitate to reach out to Kelsea or me if we can support.

Info on Walking, Biking, & Riding To School

Walking, biking, skating, scooting, riding the bus, or carpooling all build independence while supporting health, focus in class, and the environment. If driving is the only option, try parking a few blocks away and having them walk the rest of the way It helps avoid parking lot stress and gives them some physical activity before the day begins.
  • Click here for general tips on safety and route planning for active travel to school.
  • Visit 4j.lane.edu/busroutes to find your student's bus route, if they are eligible for a school bus.
  • Go to your school office to request a free Lane Transit District annual pass for your student. It's usable year-round and is not just for school travel!
  • Interested in e-bikes? Take a look at our tip sheet below with safety strategies and laws for e-bikes.

Hello RMS Families,

I hope this message finds you well! I'm writing with two quick cross country updates.

1. Our team has grown to over 45, which is great! This also means we qualify for two more assistant coaches. If you or someone you know is interested in being an assistant coach for our cross country team, here's the link to apply: https://www.schooljobs.com/careers/laneedu/jobs/5042753/assistant-cross-country-middle-school-coach-pool .

2. I had the cross country practice times wrong in the original newsletter. Cross country practice times are 3:45-5, M, T, & TH and 2:45-4 on W.

Take care, all!
