Hello 8th Grade Families,
I hope this message finds you well!
I'm writing with information about three important end-of-year events for 8th graders.
8th Grade Promotion
- Promotion is Thursday, June 11 at 6:30. The event starts at 6:30 pm and students arrive at 6:00 pm to stage in the small gym. During 6th-7th periods on June 11, all 8th grade students have mandatory rehearsal from 2:10 - 3:40 pm. Any student who does not attend rehearsal, will NOT participate in the Promotion event unless prior arrangements are made in advance with an administrator. Immediately following Promotion, 8th graders are encouraged to meet their families on the soccer field for pictures.
- Please complete this short Promotion RSVP form, linked here.
8th Grade 'Visit to SEHS' & 8th Grade 'End of Year Celebration' at the YMCA
- We are collecting field trip permission slip forms for the 8th Grade 'Visit to SEHS' on 5/21 and for the 8th Grade 'End of Year Celebration' at the YMCA on 6/12. Parents/guardians will need to sign and return one permission slip that covers both events. The permission slip is attached to this message and also can be picked up in the front office. Please return signed permission slips to the front office as soon as possible.
- In addition, we are in need of parent volunteers to chaperone these events. Volunteering is a great way to be a part of these important end of year activities! See below for more info...
The 8th Grade 'Visit to SEHS' is Thursday, May 21
- On Thursday, May 21, our 8th graders will participate in a walking field trip to South Eugene High School for a tour of the school and student panel activity! We have two different groups going... students will be in the morning group or in the afternoon group depending on when they have their language arts class. If your student has language arts in periods 1-3, they will go in the morning group. If your student has language arts in periods 5-7, they will go in the afternoon group.
- The morning group will go from 9:15 - 11:30. The afternoon group will go from 1:20 - 3:20.
-
We hope parents/guardians will sign up to volunteer at this link. Parents/guardian must have completed the 4j volunteer application process, linked here.
The 8th Grade 'End of Year Celebration' at the YMCA is Friday, June 12 from 9:45 - 12:15.
- On Friday, June 12, the last day of school, Roosevelt's 8th graders will be treated to a private 'end of year celebration' at the YMCA.
- The YMCA is opening up the pool, gym, and computer/teen spaces for a private event just for Roosevelt 8th graders from 10:00 - 12:15 on the last day of school. We are super grateful to the YMCA for their support and planning for this fun event!
- This should be a lot of fun for our 8th graders! Students will return to RMS by 12:30 just before school lets out.
- 8th graders will report to the cafeteria at 9:45 for attendance and then walk over to the YMCA from there.
-
IMPORTANT NOTES: Students may not leave early unless a parent makes arrangeme

Dear RMS Parents & Guardians,
This is a reminder that 8th grade students will begin the OSAS (Oregon Statewide Assessment System) Science assessment during the week of May 18th.
If you would like to opt your student out of the OSAS Science assessment, please complete the exemption form, linked here.
Please note that the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) only accepts Science and ELPA exemptions when a disability or religion based reason is explicitly stated on the form.
Additional information is available on the 4J website at this link.

Each Spring, all 6th, 7th, and 8th graders participate in the Oregon Statewide Assessment System (OSAS) testing. These tests help guide systems-level decisions and comparisons about instructional efficacy. 6th, 7th, and 8th graders take ELA (English Language Arts) and Mathematics tests. 8th graders also take the Science test. Additionally, all 6th, 7th, and 8th graders are provided an opportunity to complete the Student Educational Equity Development (SEED) Survey, which asks about access to resources, school connections, and academic opportunities. Click here for more information about OSAS tests, and click here for more details about the SEED survey or see the document below.
This year, we are changing how we do state assessments at Roosevelt. Students will be testing in their subject area classes (ELA, Math, & Science), and we will not be running a special testing schedule. ELA will test the week of May 4, Math the week of May 11, and Science the week of May 18 (8th grade only).
We gain valuable information about the academic health and wellness of our school from these assessments.
You may opt out your child at any time for selected tests and/or the SEED survey. Opt out forms and additional information can be found online at this link. To opt your child out of the SEED survey, use this form or the document below. Students who opt out will remain in their classroom while their classmates test, maintaining a quiet environment.
