Principal’s Letter


Greetings, RMS Families!


Welcome back, and here we go… we are ready to start the 2026-27 school year!


This communication is in lieu of the back-to-school packet we historically have sent in the mail and is a repeat of the information we sent out last week. 


Below are some quick updates for your planning purposes and linked from this message are beginning-of-the-year documents and forms. We know it is a *lot*, and we hope you can find some uninterrupted time in the next week to peruse it. We appreciate your attention!


We’re really looking forward to the school year starting and welcoming students! Kelsea and I are excited to be returning as an admin team this year and are grateful for the opportunity to work another year alongside the incredible Roosevelt staff and community. It has been wonderful to work with the Roosevelt community, students, and staff the past 13 years, and I’m excited to continue the work we have been doing together. I believe wholeheartedly in what we are doing at Roosevelt, in centering equity, in fostering empathy, and infusing compassion all while creating an extremely high quality and rigorous educational experience for our students. 


The Roosevelt staff remains dedicated to continuing our connection with and support for every member of our school community. Our focus has long been on inclusion, belonging, and fostering a sense of community, and to that end, as we start our year, we’d like to re-share our school’s commitment statement: 


The Roosevelt Middle School staff stands together against bigotry, harassment, bullying, and any form of discrimination. We support a learning community where there is cooperation, fairness, and mutual respect. We believe students learning at the highest level is the rule… not the exception. The RMS staff believes in a world where everyone… our students… our staff… our parents… and our community celebrate the strength and power of diversity. 


We stand together as a united school committed to supporting the success of all students. Regardless of where a student worships, where a student comes from, what language a student speaks at home, a student’s ability, the color of a student’s skin, or who a student loves, every individual adds to the mosaic of our school community. Our differences, not our similarities, are what make us stronger as a whole.


I’d also like to share a few staffing updates. Roosevelt is welcoming a number of new staff members this year.

  • Scottie Gilbert is our new attendance clerk.

  • Tanya Rocheleau will be teaching 8th grade Language Arts (Meredith Coelho is shifting to 7th grade language arts this year). 

  • Kevin Summerfield will be teaching 8th grade US History. 

  • Drew White will be teaching 6th grade Ancient Civilization and one section of our 6th grade Maker's Experience elective. 

  • Paxton Miller will be teaching PE/Health 8. 

  • Kari Ludington will be Roosevelt’s second counselor. She also will be a counselor at SEHS. 

  • Holly Lynn will be teaching Science & and Science 8.

  • Rachel Stroh will be teaching English Language Development.


As we move into the new school year and throughout the year, we welcome your ideas and questions about the Roosevelt Middle School experience. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me or Kelsea. 


6th Grade Welcome Day - Tues, September 8th, 2026

All Incoming 6th Graders 9:00am - 3:40pm:

We’re excited to welcome our new sixth graders on Tuesday, September 8th, for our 6th Grade Welcome Day. 6th grade students will take part in orientation activities, meet staff, and tour the building led by our CORE Leaders & Greeters. Students do not need to bring backpacks or supplies. Breakfast will be served at 8:30 AM (doors open at 8:15 AM), and our program starts at 9:00 AM with a short welcome assembly. Lunch will be provided, and dismissal is at 3:40 PM. Bus routes will run on their regular schedule.


Incoming “NEW” 7th & 8th Graders 1:00pm - 1:45pm:

We invite all new 7th and 8th grade students to a brief welcome program beginning at 1:00 PM. Students do not need to bring backpacks or school supplies for this visit. This is a great opportunity for new-to-Roosevelt 7th/8th students to become familiar with the building, meet staff, tour the school, and start the year feeling confident and connected.


1st Day of School For All Students - Wed, September 9th, 2026

We look forward to welcoming all students on Wednesday, September 9th, with the school day beginning at 9:00 AM and dismissal at 2:35 PM. Doors open at 8:15 AM, and breakfast will be served starting at 8:30 AM. Students will begin their day in House, our Advisory class, where they will receive their schedules, lockers, and planners, and have the opportunity to connect with friends and peers. House class lists will be posted in the forum for all students.


Important info 

  • We hope you will take some time to review the RMS Student Handbook with your student. Our handbook contains a wealth of need-to-know information about Roosevelt including our school-wide rules & expectations and school policies. We’ll be reviewing the handbook with students at school during the first few weeks of school, and later in September, we’ll be asking parents/guardians to confirm they have reviewed it with their students. We believe a shared understanding of Roosevelt’s expectations and policies will benefit the success of all students.  Here’s a weekly guide for reviewing the handbook with your student over three weeks:

    • Week of 9/8/26: Read pages 0 - 6: The RMS Commitment Statement through Additional RMS Information

    • Week of 9/14/26: Read pages 7 - 13: Attendance Information through 4J School District Technology and Internet Use

    • Week of 9/21/26: Read pages 14 - 19: RMS Expectations through the Parent/Guardian Acknowledgement

  • At Roosevelt, cell phones and other electronic devices—including smartwatches—must be turned off and kept in lockers all day unless needed for documented medical, 504, or IEP reasons. This has been our policy for years and is in alignment with 4j policy and Gov. Tina Kotek’s executive order directing school districts in Oregon to adopt and implement policies that prohibit the use of cell phones and similar internet-connected devices in school buildings for the entire school day. The Roosevelt staff are committed to an environment free from distractions. Please support us and your student by not messaging students during school hours. If communication is necessary, please call the office at (541) 790-8500, and we will have a note delivered.

  • One breakfast and one lunch are free for all students this year. Through the 2026–27 school year, all enrolled 4J students may receive one complete breakfast and one complete lunch each school day at no charge. Additional purchases—including seconds and extra milk—will be charged to the student's meal account according to the current Nutrition Services price list. Families may add funds to a student's meal account or receive a monthly billing statement for these additional purchases. Student meal accounts can be accessed at this link.   • Coffee, energy drinks, boba, soda, juice, hot chocolate and similar beverages are not permitted inside the building. Students are encouraged to bring water bottles. Roosevelt has filtered water filling stations.

  • As noted in the bell schedule linked below, 4J middle schools are moving to a 6-period day this year, with Wednesdays as early release days.

  • Please mark your calendar for our upcoming Curriculum Night. On Thursday, September 24th, 6:00 – 8:10 PM - hear from administrators, counselors, and the Parents At Roosevelt (PAR) 501(c)(3) organization, meet teachers, and learn about your student’s classes. We look forward to seeing you!

  • Cross Country season begins in September. More information, including registration and school physical information, can be found on the Roosevelt website, linked here. We hope your student will come out and be a part of our team!

  • Message from Tanya Schwarze, RMS School Nurse:

    • Dear Families, 

To ensure a safe and healthy start to the school year, I am reaching out to families of students who require health plans or medication administration during school hours.

  1. Schedule Your Consultation: please use the link below to book a 30-minute window to meet with me between August 26th and September 11th. During this time, we will finalize your student’s health plan and check in any necessary medications. If your student will be taking medications at school, please schedule your appointment for in person. Scheduling Link 

  2. Important Medication Safety Rules: when you come for your appointment, please remember:

    • Adults only: Medication must be hand-delivered by an adult. For safety reasons, please do not send medication in your student’s backpack.

    • Original Packaging: Prescription meds must have the pharmacy label. Over-the-counter meds must be in a brand-new, unopened container.

    • Paperwork: Please bring a signed Medication Authorization Form  for each medication.

ROOSEVELT SCHOOL SUPPLY LIST – 2026-27

 

Coming back to school can mean significant costs to families. If you need help purchasing school supplies, please call the Roosevelt office at 541-790-8500 or email Laura Fuhriman (fuhriman_l@4j.lane.edu), our School Secretary and Front Office Manager. 

We always need school supply donations.  Reams of lined and copy paper are always useful, as are pencils, pens, spiral notebooks, band-aids, glue sticks, and tissues. Thank you for your generosity.

All students:

1 – binder -suggest 2”-3” non zippered 

1 – pack of 8-tab dividers

2 – pens: black and/or blue ink

1  – pack of college ruled notebook paper

3 – boxes no. 2 pencils (1 box for Advisor’s room)

3 – boxes of tissues front office/advisor’s room

PE class: Close-toed, athletic shoes that allow for movement 

1 – zipper pencil pouch

As needed/requested by teachers:

2 – graph paper pads (4-5 squares/inch)

4 – spiral notebooks

Note: Please do not send permanent markers, i.e. Sharpies, or correction fluid to school.

Free LTD Transit Pass!

  • All students in 4J schools can get a student pass to ride Lane Transit District (LTD) buses for free.

  • Student transit passes can be used to travel anywhere within the LTD service area. Student passes can be used at any time—after school, on weekends and during school breaks, as well as to get to and from school each day.

  • To get a free LTD student transit pass, available as a tap card. Middle school students can request their own passes at the front office.

  • Passes are valid from September 1 of the current school year to September 30 of the following year and will be renewed by the school each year.
