Hello Roosevelt Families,
I hope this message finds you well!
Congrats once more to our cross country team. Our girls team took first place at the Great Donut Chase race last Thursday and our boys team took second!
Tuesday 10/27 is picture retake day during periods 1 & 2. Students who did not take a picture will be called from class to take their picture. Students who want to take a new picture will have an opportunity during period 2.
This week’s update includes information about FLEX & Period 10, Spirit Week, Activity Night, Halloween, and upcoming student led conferences.
|
Beginning on Thursday, October 15, we began our twice weekly FLEX periods. Instead of House (period 0) on Tuesdays and Thursdays, students go to FLEX (period 10). Students go directly to FLEX and attendance is taken in FLEX. FLEX happens every Tuesday and Thursday and is an opportunity for students to receive interventions and extensions. Students can request to see teachers and teachers can request to see students. We offer additional activities like clubs, affinity groups, study periods, and gym. Students remain in their assigned FLEX session for 4-5 weeks, before moving to another session. Our current FLEX session ends on 11/5.
Because we are taking attendance in FLEX, parents may notice absence codes for period 10 if a student is late or does not attend.

With Halloween in mind, I’m sharing some guidelines for Halloween costumes. While we love to have a little fun at school on Halloween, we do have some additional parameters when it comes to Halloween costumes. Please keep the following guidelines in mind as you help your students plan costumes. Please also be sure to review these guidelines with your student… it’s always unfortunate when a student dresses up for school only to arrive at school and find that their costume, or a part of their costume, is not allowed.
- Costumes should follow the regular 4j dress code as outlined in the Roosevelt Middle School Student Handbook (search for “dress code”).
- Costumes should show sensitivity to and awareness of our culture of safety and belonging.
- In accordance with the 4j school district's discrimination and harassment policy, costumes cannot perpetuate harmful stereotypes about groups of people.
- Halloween costumes should not include masks, excessive amounts of fake blood, internal organs and/or fluids on the outside of the body, nor fake or real weapons of any kind.
- We need to be able to see who a student is, and students need to be able to participate in their classes, including PE.
If necessary, students may be asked to modify their costumes, change out of or have a change of clothing brought from home if necessary-- thanks in advance for your help, and we’re excited to have a little fun together as a school! These same guidelines also apply to Activity Night, if your student is considering dressing up that evening. All of that said, this is a fun time of year, and we are looking forward to it!

I’m excited to share information about our upcoming student led conferences. This year, we are again holding student led conferences. Our desire is for students to take ownership of their learning, engage with their families about their areas of strengths and challenges, and show off the hard work of middle school. If your student was at RMS last year, we are using a similar format. Over the next few weeks, students will be assembling portfolios of their school work in all of their classes, including reflections on each class. At conferences students share their work with their parents/guardians and also have an opportunity to speak with teachers. Conferences are scheduled on 11/23 from 11:40am - 8pm and 11/24 from 8:15am - 12pm. Families will schedule their conference times in Parent Square beginning on 11/3.
In addition, this year we are kicking off our Helping All People (HAP) program at student led conferences. What is H.A.P.? For close to thirty years, families at Roosevelt have shown their generous spirit by donating food, clothing and other supplies to Eugene-area families during November and December. Beginning at student led conferences, RMS will be collecting non-perishable food and monetary donations (used to purchase pre-paid gift cards) to support families in our community.
Stay tuned for more details on conferences and HAP soon!
As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Kelsea or me if we can support.
All the best!
Mike & Kelsea

We are working to make SchoolPay easier for families to navigate and to ensure that financial circumstances do not prevent students from participating in school activities and opportunities.
For eligible items, families may see several payment options:
Full Price — Select this option if you are able to pay the full cost.
Flexible Price — If the full cost would be difficult for your family, select this option and contribute the amount your family can comfortably afford.
Full Financial Assistance — If your family is unable to contribute at this time, select the $0 option. This lets us know that your student would still like to participate or receive the item. A staff member may follow up privately to discuss available support.
Donations — Families who would like to contribute additional funds may have the opportunity to help support other students or specific school programs.
Our goal is to make school opportunities accessible to all students while providing families with simple and respectful payment options.
For all purchases, but donations you need to log in SchoolPay.

Support Roosevelt by making a donation through SchoolPay. Choose from several donation options to support the programs, activities, and resources that benefit our students.
Support Roosevelt through the BottleDrop Give program! Families can donate directly to Roosevelt through their BottleDrop account, or stop by the Roosevelt front office to pick up Blue Bags and BottleDrop stickers. Fill your Blue Bag with eligible bottles and cans, attach the sticker, and drop it off at a BottleDrop location. It’s an easy way to turn your bottles and cans into support for Roosevelt students and our school community. You can find more information here.
Support Roosevelt through direct donations to EEF (Eugene Education Foundation) at any time of the year, by clicking the link below and making an online contribution or sending a check. Make sure to note “RMS Staffing” in the designation box. Donate directly by clicking here
Sign up for the Community Rewards program by linking your Fred Meyer Rewards Card to Roosevelt. You can search by our name or by our non-profit number GB554.
Download the Box Top for Education App in Google Play or the App Store, sign up (or sign in) and take a picture of your receipt within 14 days of purchase. It will automatically credit the school for each product. For more information, click on the link above.
