Dear Roosevelt Families,
As we begin the new school year, the Roosevelt staff seeks to partner with you to support the success of all of our students. This partnership is essential to creating a positive and focused learning environment where every student can thrive. Critical to our success with this is your support with our school’s cell phone and electronic device policy. I’m writing to request that you talk with your student about our cell phone policy before they come to school this week.
Our policy is that cell phones and other personal electronic devices (including smart watches) may not be used by students on the Roosevelt campus from 8:15 am until the end of the school day, unless needed for documented medical, 504 or IEP reasons. All personal electronic devices, including phones and Smart watches, are to be kept in student lockers if brought to school. Additionally, earbuds and headphones are to be in student lockers unless requested by the teacher for school purposes.
This policy is in place because we care deeply about our students, and we want to ensure all of our students engage fully in their educational experience, free from the distractions and off ramps to learning these devices create.
As a staff, we are dedicated to fostering an environment where students can concentrate on their learning and interact meaningfully with their peers. This helps to create a rigorous learning environment where students are focused on learning as well as helping them build and practice the critical social skills needed for successful interpersonal interactions in life. We ask that you have a conversation with your students about this. Please share our policy with them. Please talk with them about it and let them know why it is in place.
Please also let your students know that if we see them with their phone out, we will kindly ask them to put it in their locker. If this happens multiple times, it will result in phone calls home and potentially a student specific phone plan with the phone being checked in at the office each day. Again, our goal is to partner with you in this endeavor to create the best learning environment we can at Roosevelt.
If families need to communicate with students during the school day, then please call the office (541-790-8500) and have a note delivered.
We are extremely excited to welcome our students into the building and are looking forward to a great year together!
